done it, takes quite awhile, make sure you protect the soil/topsoil somehow from the critters that will be extremely attracted to the smell...
my old next door neighbor used crabshells when i was a kid as top dressing in his yard, he always had the prettiest roses in the neighborhood

wait till they're good and dry and smash the shit out of them. the bigger the chunks, the longer they'll take to break down.
anytime you top dress, you should scratch it into the soil. a lot of amendments will rot on top of the soil and be wasted.

Clackamas Coots said that he uses barley seed for the chitinase, it's the enzyme that breaks down chitin. Otherwise, chitin is pretty dormant in the soil.

hmm watermelon. i wonder will it have any effect on your plants come next year ? legend has it that bud grown near or in the same soil as some fruits will take on the essence of said fruit through synergy.

I frequently used different fruit that I have on hand; like apple in a soil recycle, never tasted it though.
Like molasses, doesn't make weed sweet. But it does make for a happy micro critter heard and is a decent source of micronutrients.

unfortunately, synergy equals psychosomatic in this case. i've grown weed in a corn field, tasted nothing like corn.
grew within feet of a shitload of muscadine grapes for years, and the weed never tasted like muscadines. which is unfortunate, that would have been awesome.
