should i use a pot or not

anyway right now i have a small plant growing in my room about 6" high. I dont have a light setup cuz id get caught so im gonna hafta grow outside. I started the plant off in a paper cup with nothing special just dirt from my yard but now that its getting bigger i am planning on moving it to a grow spot that ill sneak to once my parents r asleep. I was just wondering if u guys think it would be better to plant it in a pot with planting soil or if it would be better to just dig a hole and fill the hole wit potting soil? I was thinking the pot would better retain water in case i cant chek it frequently. I've bin reading watering it 1x a week can b enough but i have also read reports of watering 3x a day so since im writin this thread up it would also be of great help if someone could help me out with how many times i would need to water per week.

thnx man i read up on some articles u previously posted n it realy helpd me out. My bad for postin thiz wen it was very similar to other posts but im on my itouch n its a pain to search around on n i couldnt find anything. Thanx again
