What purpose does it serve to cover top of plant but leave hole where your plant grows out

When the water evaporates, it condenses on the inside of the lid and drip back down. The effect is that it decreases evaporation and helps keep the medium more evenly moist.

You wont see something like that in a commercial grow. It is a gimmick and a waste of money IMO.
