Seed starting problem..dry taproot

So I germinated one seed..and in a couple days it showed its taproot. Perfect. I placed it in very damp soil and let it sit but idiot me didnt cover it with anything so the light dried out the soil pretty bad. :wall: I looked this morning and the seed's root looked pretty dry so i shut off the light (125w cfl) and rewatered it so it was moist again...should i just start another seed or will it recover?

It's possible it could recover; give it a few days. If it doesnt sprout within a week, germinate another seed.

Keep it moist and hope for the best. Mist the top well and cover the pot with a baggie or plastic wrap to trap the humidity. Just make sure that when the sprout pops out of the soil you remove the plastic. I've had sprouts that stayed in under the plastic/humidity dome too long after coming up and had problems with damping off.

Why in the world wouldn't you have covered the seed? Also, they don't need light until they emerge from the soil. Even after they pop out just give them enough light to prevent stretching. After a few days of gentle light, give 'em all the lumens you got.

Good luck.

It is probably already dead. Ive had this happen to me before. I would suggest either when starting seeds to leave it in the dark for 12 hours for the taproot to get established in the soil before it can dry out real bad. Also if you have really hot or dry conditions you need to make sure to spray your soil as often as you can for the first few days just to keep moist but not soaking the soil

It was germinating for a couple days before that so thats why I put it under the light because I was expecting it to shoot up really fast and I didn't want it to sit in the dark and cause stretch. I was pretty drunk lol, so I didnt remember to cover it with plastic wrap. I looked at it today keeping it moist ever since and it grew longer and started to crack open so I placed it better in the dirt, wet the dirt, and covered it tightly. I also started another seed in a cup of dirt just incase. If they both work ill just keep both..I'm in a pc case so that's why Im only doing 1-2 at a time.
