Seed Addiction.. seems to be becoming a thing for me

So I've always drooled over strains on seedfinder, drooled over rumors of clone only cuts going around,
salivated at the idea of stealth packaging defeating customs,

As I've gotten older I've had the luck to have had a large bagseed collection and used and lost it and then also to have had friends gift me small piles of their own breeding with and/or with out known named gear.

So I've got the bug. Every bag seed I get, I bag and label with the date found, the source of the bud and the mother strain.

I've also been unable basicly to stop searching seedbanks for prized strains that I haven't had or have dreamt of having.

And for such a few amount of genetic such a decent chunk of change goes out, other wise this addiction wouldn't be such a problem.

I start to want to collect seeds from every one of my favorite flowers and then start tracking down all the crosses.
I'm gonna have more seeds than I can grow in my lifetime at some point.

Do others suffer this affliction?

How do you treat it?

Had any surprises in your seed collecting?

Also, do you feel differently about seeds made at home by people using name brand gear?

Do others suffer from this affliction? Yes

How do you treat it? By buying more seeds

Had any surprises in seed collecting? Ordering $30 beans from gypsy and being sent Sensi's $150 NL5 x Haze instead. Being sent straight hemp. Freebies that out perform $200 beans.

Also,do you feel differently about seeds made at home by people using name brand gear? Not at all. It's a bit odd watching breeder's lose their shit over someone breeding their own stuff. You pay for those beans, they are yours to do with as you please. These breeders did the exact same thing.

Two very great ways of dealing with this affliction. Breed your own strains, connect with other growers and trade cuts and beans. At least this shaves the cost thing down.

I have over a million seeds, yeppers all cataloged, been breedin and tradin for years. Haven't been on a seedbank site since 09 8)

I have made my first crosses in my second run of legal growing. Chose a Kosher kush x Ak47 male and pollinated a mother of Sensi Star x Ak47, a mother of Mendo Purps, and Cali Special mom.
Learnt a bit about handling males and moms at the time but none of that survived to now except the seeds. Now planning to grow some of those out and been slowly spreading some of the kkxakXssxak seeds and getting feedback.
One friend has the flower almost ready to harvest, can't wait to taste his pheno of my seeds.

Seeds were very exciting for me at first, until I discovered that 90+% of these award winning genetics yield really shitty phenotypes. As a commercial grower, I'm only looking for that 1 in 100 magical pheno that I can make moms from and clone. The quality of my product and my rep lies solely on those rare, special moms (save for my growing skill, which is world class ;)). I've been through over 200 breeders seeds, know how many amazing phenos I've found? 3. I don't have a lot of space, so I really can't grow out more than 10 at a time, so it's a long, boring process searching for the next magic mom. My 3 mom strains are all sativa doms, which is great because that's what my custies want. But I really need a nice, medicinal, 8 week indica. I think I'm going for DJ Short's Blueberry to round out my stable, I've heard such great things when you find the right one. I don't think they come in feminized, so I'll have to get regs and toss the males. I hate the time and effort wasted on that. I think I'll order from Attitude tonight, glad I ran into this thread..

Shit. Out of stock at Attitude, and almost everywhere else. I should have bought them when I had the chance. Oh well, they'll email me when they're available...

Been breedin for years, have yet to pop a bad pheno of my gear. The secret is crossing cousins, I called the chapter in my book Kissin Cousins lol It is a trick that very few do.

And if ya get that DJ order and pull a male, breed with it !!!

I made my best medical strain, Heidi's Unicorn which involved crossing my Pinkberry which was Pink Kush X DJ Blueberry with my Rihanna which was the Pink Kush X My TF69

This is Heidi's Unicorn

Pretty lady, funky strain names. It is very hard to believe that I get mostly loser phenos from award winning genetics from world class breeders, but that somehow you alone have discovered a secret they don't know about and have never cracked a bad pheno bean of your own. I can't make myself believe that, sorry. You don't really use boiling water on your plants roots, right? That sounded like an inside joke kinda thing...

Is what it is. The folks growin em are happy, I guess that's all that matters. Was just tryin to help. I could have a bunch of growers post and verify, but what would the point be? If ya don't get that the boiling roots thing is based in science, you'd prolly not accept the breeding tricks. Just cause I do things differently doesn't mean I don't know what I'm doin 8)

Thanks for the help, sincerely. If you would link to the science behind the boiling roots thing, I'd love to take a look. I'm always up for learning new things, and long as they're legit...

Well it is a thing that most all plants do during a flood and it is in all the botany books. Basically they start fermenting sugars into alcohol in order to stay alive during the flood. In our initial experiments we simply flooded the plants, but discovered this opened a door to cause mold in some gardens. The answer to this problem was using boiling water as it deprives the root of O2 without the potential for mold. Here is a good write up describing others experiments,
https://aob.oxfordjournals.org/content/79/suppl_1/3.full.pdf
It does not make the herb more potent, what it does do is start the cure, yeppers that genetic response to no O2 in the root zone is what we call the cure 8)

It allows you to feed till the end and still get a fast fade, once we water em with boiling water, we leave under the lights 3 to 5 days (varies with strains) till they fade. Once harvested and dried a bud will smoke like it has had a 10 days in the jar cure. Very simply put all it does is speed up the cure. And since I reuse my medium, it also cleans and sterilizes it (somewhat)

Some more,,,,,

"When a plant cell is starved for oxygen, it cannot efficiently generate adenosine triphosphate or ATP, the high-energy molecule plants use for energy storage," explained Julia Bailey-Serres, one of the key researchers participating in the study and a professor of genetics in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at UC Riverside. "Because the plant cannot generate enough energy to sustain normal growth, it tries a different approach: it taps into its energy reserves, resulting in more sugars breaking down, as opposed to when oxygen is available, in order to produce ATP. These subtle changes in metabolism are characteristic of low oxygen stress in plant and animal cells. It's similar to the production of lactic acid in our bodies when we exercise. We produce lactic acid as a by-product because we are not producing energy aerobically."

Ah, I see. I don't cure my buds, anyway, as no one can tell the difference either way and it's less work. I just dry them and they're out the door. Thanks for the links...

That's the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, she's stunning, I could cry. I go to bed at night praying that one day I'll come across something special but I never even imagined those colours :peace:
