Scientists say Canadian-built laser lets them manipulate antimatter

New system blasts antihydrogen atoms, chilling and slowing them dramatically, scientists say
Antimatter atoms get annihilated whenever they contact matter — which makes up everything. That makes them hard to study, which has been a problem, scientists say, because studying antimatter is key to understanding how the universe formed.

So the question has been, how can you manipulate antimatter atoms in order to study and measure them properly?

A team of scientists say they have figured out a way to do that by slowing down antimatter atoms with blasts from a special Canadian-built laser. And they say that could make it possible to create antimatter molecules — larger particles more similar to the matter we encounter in the real world — in the lab.

"This is where it really gets exciting for us," said Makoto Fujiwara, a research scientist at TRIUMF, Canada's particle accelerator centre in Vancouver, B.C. "You can really start doing things that are basically unimaginable previously,"

Won't paste the whole article, worth looking at.

OMG...I can't believe that people created a laser that lets us manipulate such small particles...Can we really create our own universe by using it?

Being able to manipulate such a small particle means little (it is though quite an accomplishment) unless you have the means to store these particles. When you can store and accumulate them that's when you can actually create something from that. Not another Universe..lol. But energy, weapons, even a fuel source to travel beyond the stars. Definitely a bomb big enough to blow "us" beyond those very stars. Quantum Physics is way above my pay grade but Im not so stupid that I cant see that even our most talented scientists are playing with something that may explode in all of our faces. There's not exactly a user's manual to follow here....

That's if AI doesn't do us in first.

think of the unlimited power if we can learn to harnmess it. clean power. i still think we should be learning to harness lightnig bolts and useing that as energy. i do worry about my carbon footprint with all this electricity were useing to grow, cool, humidify and fans for strenghening the plants.

And then consider the amount of power its going to take to create and store it. Lol... kinda like growing bud. :bigjoint:

Small steps, science is rarely moved ahead by great leaps. Considering it was not something we could do before it is an advancement. There is nothing like an experiment that does what you expect it to do when you are breaking new ground.
