i got a san pedro from a friend its kinda beat up but i was wondering what the general up keep would be or how to nurse this one back to healthIMG_20120328_104945.jpg

I would cut the sprite off, let it sit for a few weeks, dip the base in rooting compound and place it two inches into sandy soil that is fertalized and drains very well.

Then I would cut the rot off of the other piece and make sure that the roots are in sandy well draining soil as well. Water once a week in the summer and once every two or three in winter. You will be surprised at how quickly, after it is rooted, the cactus grows.

I know what you're upto skunkpunk. I'm on to you buddy.
haha ur into ornamental cacti as well?

and i think the rot comes up the side of it aswell i need to pick up some soil for it its in pretty shallow soil but would mg cactus soil work? i know its horrable for the plants but maby cacti arnt as weak to it i litterally know almost nothing about them i know its a san pedro cacti i know the cemicals in it and i know u can cut the top and new heads will sprout off it.... but thats all i know so as much info would be extreamly helpful i would like to know as much as possable about this beautiful cacti as it would look great in my garden and if any one knows anything about prickly pears id like to know more about those too...

so i cut the little one off and leave it sit to dry out or what? i was told i can cut it and stick it rright into soil and it would root also how big of a container should i put them in if there under my400 watt mh.hps

the soil was almost totally dry and i had just watered it maby 15 mins prior to taking the picture but im thinking of picking up some mg cactus soil and repotting it and trying to seprate the prickly pear and san pedro

and hows this idea if i cut the top off and replant the little guy then cut the black shit off the top then cut the bottom and roots off could i replant that big one then with both ends cut off? or would it be worth it to keep the roots but replant it so the cactus is pointing straight up?

The cut portion tends to scab over when it is allowed to sit in the air. If it does not turn into this corkey substance at the wound, that wound will get infected and the plant will die.

I wouldn't cut both ends off just yet, you want a growing end if you can help it - the plant will eventually throw off a sprite if it does not have an end but you still are new. I would simply try to save both pieces.

ok well ill give it a little time under my lights maby a week or two then cut the sprite off let it dry till the bottom gets a tan leathery covering over it then dip that into a rrooting hormone? or right into soil, then ill repot the big base and cut off all the black shit i kinda pulled on the cactus a little and it appears the black does go all the way down one side so sould i cut that off after i repot it or should i just cut the top and leave the black shit on the side.... more pics to come when im repotting it MABY TOGETHER WITH ALL OF URR'S HELP WE CAN START A SAN PEDRO THREAD OF WHICH LIKES HAVE NEVER BEEN SEEN MUHAHA!

no need for the hormones, just place it on some dry well draining sand, and check it like every 2 weeks for roots... don't water before there are actual roots.

should i water the soil before i put the cacti in it? and any one have any idea about the mirical grow cactus soil? or is there a better soil?

No, there are no roots, and it can survive for months without water. Any well draining well composted soil will do. They can be verocious feeders.

would subcools super soil work well? i plan on making a batch for my new babies and would have enough left over for them...
