Safe Water Storage Question

So here is my setup, I have approximately a 10 gallon bin that I use to store my water. Inside of this bin is a pump which pumps water into my grow tent (via a flip of a switch) to water my plants. The bin is opaque black and has a black lid so no light penetrates through.

Here is my issue, after about 3-4 weeks of storing water I opened up the bin and noticed it had a bit of a pond smell to it. All of the equipment was slick to the touch, which leads me to believe algae is starting to grow in there.

My question is this safe? Can the plants handle a bit of algae in their diet or will this eventually get out of control? Are there any water additives out there that can prevent algae from growing? Or should I just stick to the old fashioned let water sit over night then water by hand in the morning?

Appreciate any comments.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure you do not want algae in your reservoir, especially if you are growing hydroponically. Algae will feed off your nutrients leaving less for your plants.
