I have some old white pine and black spruce logs that are rotting. They are damp and spongy, you can grab handfulls off the logs. I'm thinking of cooking it in with compost and adding it to my organic soil mix. So far in my organic outdoor garden it seems to be doing well with my tomatoes. Will this be Ok to use indoors? shredder4

Both are acidic so just make sure you balance the pH of your compost, which I am sure you do, but pines and spruce will just cause a little more pH adjusting to be needed than some other types of woods.

I do wonder about the ph thing. I know a ph of 7 will kill mold, so I'm afraid too much could also kill beneficial fungi.

How about adding the rotting pine to a compost tea? Would the resulting tea have more fungal activity?

If it's spongy that tells me it has probably got beetles and termites in it. Which isn't something I'd want to be putting in my dirt. If you want wood to compost find a tree surgeon or arborists and get wood chips.
