Roots during flowering

Alright, my first post here as a new member! Definately wont be my last. So here's my issue...

I was growing my sativa strain (first plant as well) in a 2-3 gallon plastic pot and I let the roots get all the way to the bottom... It was about a foot tall at this point
I transplanted it into a 5-gallon and started flowering it. I expect it to overshoot 3-feet tall any day now.

So to wrap all this up my question is, can a plant get rootbound while it's flowering? I'd assume the roots grow even more during flowering since the size increases so much. And if it can, what are the negative effects it will have on my plant if it becomes rootbound?
