Root Trimming

Was wondering how much of a root ball can you trim to re-pot back into the same container? Had success in the past with a rootbound mother plant growing in a 36lt container.

I trimmed a full circle around it and trimmed the bottom also. I removed about 60% of the root ball and it thrived again but quickly filled up the container within a month.

Could i trim it right back to only a handfull of roots?

Any experience on this subject would be much appreciated.✌

Only done about 50% myself. Honestly if you want to remove so much why not just take a new clone as a mother an flower this one out?

I didnt have enough time to raise another mother.
I was cutting her for outdoor grow in the peak of planting season.
Im just a bit concerned about running into the same problem this time around.
Im growing three mothers at the moment still still young with 3 months before season begins again. I might experiment with 1 and see how it goes
