Rockwool cubes and seedlings....

So a friend of mine will be growing in soil. He just got some seeds germinated. He placed them in water soaked rockwool cubes under a cfl light.

My question is.....Do the seeds need any nutrients now?
Can I go without nutrients until I see leaves?

No, dont give nutes yet,,,,,,:leaf: that can hurt or even kill them,,, it might not always but there will be a much better chance that they will have problems along the way, so its best:leaf: to wait a couple of weeks,, why take the chance.....:leaf:

cool. Another question... I have a 7" tall humidity dome which puts my cfl about 10" away from the seeds. Thats too far right? I guess I should have bought a much smaller humidity dome?

That is fine actually. I'd move it a little closer as the plant starts to gain roots and develop leaves but until then it really doesn't need much light. Too much light on a seedling will kill it as quick as giving a seedling nutrients.

All this stuff is in the grow faq you know... Just saying...

I just burnt two plants having my 105W CFL's being too close. 9" to 11" should be fine for sprouting and then lower them once they're standing straight 1" per day to 3" to 5" above.

I did some research and I think I understanad seeds dont even need light until they have come out of the ground. So any light now would just be to keep the temps up?

And from Bluebong, I think he means once they have spouted keep the light 3-5" from the top of the plants?

Rockwool is for hydro users, they usually have the capability to use it correctly.

But a soil grower most likely does not.

For instance, did the cubes get soaked in a PH corrected water ? If not the PH will be all out of wack because of the minerals that are still inside it from production.

Heres how i do it..pop the seeds , put them in rinsed and Ph corrected cubes (as the man xare said, i also use a tiny bit of canna rhizatonic) put them in a humidity dome at the bottom of my clone/mother box thingy about 2 feet away from a 250 watt cfl..i leave them there until they sprout then put them about 1 foot away and there they stay until there rooted in 3 inch cubes and only then do i begin to nute them a tablespoon of nute to 5 litres of water, there you go Roberts your sisters husband.....

well, I have ordered ph solution but its not here yet. The seeds are already in rockwool cubes soaked in my sinks water. No idea what ph, but the water in my city taste ok.

Should I run to the pet store for ph tester and down? If so, what do I do now that the rockwool already has seeds and is wet already?

OK i would most deffo say that ure PH will be high up in the sevens its not really what the water tastes like its the shit they put in it at the water place...as regards ure cubes obviously what i would do is let them dry out wont do them any more harm than a nasty PH , then when you need to dip them just make sure the PH is ok and you should be fine.
I reckon if your growing in soil leave the rockwool alone mate then you dont have to worry about it ...

Sorry about that!! Yes, once they sprout keep the lights 9 to 11 inches above the plants and then lower them by one inch per day until reaching the 3" to 5" mark.

I had mine 2" above after the plants sprouted and they were burnt within days.

Hope this is clearer :-)

Thanks. Im new to this and for some reason I thought it would be best to use rockwool. Now I see I should have put them straight into my 4" pots with potting soil.
