Riding The Wave

I'm starting this thread to start an informative discussion about wether or not to 'ride the wave' of my mutual fund and 401k investments.
The money invested in mutual funds has been invested for going on 6 yr.s, and seen a lot of ups and downs. Losing over 1/3 of the initial investment (i.i.) during the height of the recession, but now gaining that back plus 16% over the i.i. . the 401k has also went thru almost identical ups and downs and ups!
When I called the bank thru which the mutual fund investment is handled, their rep told me to 'stick it out' basically, and 'now is the time to invest not sell'. I'd like to have some opinion on this from some of my riu family instead of the rep at the bank who is obviously advising w/ the bank's interest in mind (my opinion).
But idk, maybe it was sound advice. The market did recouperate enuogh to give me back what I'd lost........well this is the reason for the thread in the 1st place.
What does everyone else think? Safe investments like savings acct., or c.d.'s, or continue w/ the mutual funds and a few high risk invetsments too?
Like oil for instance. Good or bad to have money in right now? Is gold still a good investment or have i missed the train on it competely?
All thoughts are appreciated and +rep to the most logicl sound advice. :peace:

Strange to see this kind of thread on RIU..I used to day trade in futures....Great way to gamble your money away...Stay away from gold and the XAU if you are new at this...Here is what the pros do(sometimes)If the S&P is above the 200 day moving average....stay long(buy) If it drops below the 200 day moving average,go short(sell) Some mutual funds will allow us to go short in them. There are ETF's that go short automatically.Do a google. A moving average just smooths out the wavely lines on the chart.easy way to see if the trend is up or down.the pros look at longer term charts.Weekly,monthly,yearly.Dont look at short term charts like 10,30,60,minute ones...Go to BIGCHARTS.com and enter SPX then ADVANCED chart. Go to Indicators on the left...Under moving average select SMA and type in 200...delete the 9 Then DRAW CHART...See how July was a good time to buy...on the 1 year chart Now enter 5 years on the chart with the same 200 day moving average...Look at January of 2008...The index was below the 200 day average...Time to sell and even go short.Shorting means you make money on the way down... Hope this helps

hey man thx for the reply. alot of good stuf there. the bottom line being that if the s&p 500 falls below 200 avg, then sell. right? (based on at least a weekly avg. NOT daily. i think i understand that right.)
and as a side note, quote from stealthygrower "Strange to see this kind of thread on RIU.."
this is a new forum here, and i love it!!! i'm glad riu is willing to create a forum such as this. helps break the stereotype of all marijuana users being 'stupid pot heads' i think.
