Relief of not having to pay bills

After researching my personal bills(mortgage, power, cell phone, etc), the companies are allowing a 6 month grace period. I'm holding off on paying any, mainly because I don't know what's going to happen and I'd rather not run out of money for food.

Is anyone else skipping some bills in the coming months?

Could you post links? I'm only seeing Toronto doing this, and that only for 60 days. I'm personally not interested to having huge bills to pay down at a later date, but I could see it working for folks with very little money...

Sorry I should have said some companies.

Here is the link for Roger's. You have 3 months.

First National is offering 6 month deferral

Im in Burlington, just south of Toronto and Hydro won't cut power until July 31st.

I obviously want to keep paying, but I'm starting to think 6 months ahead now. $1800/month is helpful from the government but that only covers about 1/3 of our costs.

Ah, no.

First, you have to eat. Then, you have to pay your bills. And you have to keep you car running.

Then whatever is left is what you have to spend and you should save some of that for the long term in a tax deferred account if possible.

Now I certainly realize if you lose your job you are not in the best financial shape and may need some help. But you probably are eligible for unemployment compensation for 6 months, and there should be extensions beyond that in this case.

Utility companies have always had help available for people in need and I would call them and let them know in advance, if necessary. I see messages to that effect on the fine print of every utility bill.

Mortgage companies will also work with you as well as car lenders. And now, they are well aware that there are widespread problems incoming.

And after all that, you should still try to avoid winding up in debt over simple monthly bills that piled up for months because you'll eventually be expected to pay. And later on down the road you won't want to pay for what you used months ago AND what you're using currently or you'll never get ahead.

Try to keep up. Or partially keep up. Put off everything and you'll be sorry later unless you can work unlimited overtime later, and don't mind less personal time because you're 'living' at work on OT.

And you never know when you might break a leg or something and be in another bad situation later.

Work ahead, not from behind.

Good Luck, we could all use a little right now. Things may work out better than projected.

And spend $1 on a lottery ticket once in a while. Somebody has to win and it's never me so maybe it will be you.

Good advice.

With so many people living paycheque to paycheque, a lot of them won't even have a choice though. The good news is, most won't lose their homes or have electricity shut off for at least a while now.

I'm not sure what is going to happen in the next 6 months with everyone building up more and more debt. Will people go bankrupt, be in worse positions than they were before, or will the government stand up and erase all debt accumulated under these extreme circumstances? Maybe even the billionaires will stand up and give a little to all the struggling people?

Well said. I consider your post a public service and imagine it'll help de-stress the situation for some folks.
Are late fees and interest charges being waived in your neck of the woods. Hope so.
On another note, I worked on the Blackbird's egress system at Beale and Kadena back in the day and felt like
I hit the lottery.

I worked EWS on the SR-71, 86-90 at Beale. U-2 there afterwards.

I doubt very much that I have any need to postpone paying any bills as long as my pension cheque gets deposited every month and the wife gets her disability.

We know we'll get a much bigger GST refund for April and if the vet is still working that will make sure the dog gets fixed as planned with money left over. I'm not sure if pensioners or AISH clients here in Alberta are getting anything extra but we'll know by next Thursday after payday.

Any extra money we get over this can just sit in the bank or pay off the VISA but I only have about $200 on now that would have got paid in any case.

I really feel for those that are so severely affected by all this but for once it looks like pretty smooth sledding for us.

Good luck all!

You know it's douche-bags like that that will get the lion's share of all the bailout money while us little guys will get the shitty end of the stick like usual.

The hubris of the rich is appalling to say the least. Maybe this crisis will finally tip the balance to cutting the stinking 1% down a notch or two but I'm not holding my breath.

Only if we do something about it.
