Will a space blanket/ emergency blanket work well for the area around my grow space? I have cardboard around the grow space, so I want to know would it be better to paint the cardboard white, or put the blanket around the cardboard?

Both will work good, lots of people use those blankets. if you dont mind painting it is almost just as good if not the same to use some white paint. paint is more even so less or no hot spots.
