RDWC flush time.

Ok Y'all...
What's the opinion out there about flushing your RDWC.
I'm talking hard flush straight water.
How long do you go for?
How long do you leave the lights on?
Do you notice faster trichome degradation while flushing?

I'm going for 3 days lights on @11/13… then 48hrs dark before harvest.

Don't do the lights on. Just darkness. Light will stress em out and do nothing positive. As for flush, I flush with straight ro water, not phd' for last 10-15 days.

Also, I don't ever empty my system before adding it. I instead, let my reservoir get very low, which normally I fill with nutrient mixed water when it gets semi low, and then once it's as low as the pump can allow, I fill with ro. Sometimes I'll vacuum out the last bit before adding but usually not. They drink that stuff quick.

Interesting, my concern was not being able to flush well enough in a short period. If I turn the lights off tonight it will only have had 5 days to flush. You think that will suffice?
Not using far red, thought I would increase dark by an hour to give extra signalling for end of cycle.
Hey, I'm somewhat of a noob so thanks for your tips.

A flush isn't needed unless you have issues... I wouldn't do the light thing either just don't let it com back on the day your cutting it down..
Just reduce the nutrient strength in the final week or so as to not starve the plant.. if the plants fan leave are going excessively yellow you are starving her and she is consuming her self..

Many people have there own takes on these things but i have tried the light thing and I used to flush so i have done both. I get better results from not flushing in relation to flavour and crop size..

Anyway I'm sure I'll upset some people with this but hey..... happy growing..

Two highly controversial statements haha...
I guess it comes down to what is bro science and what has been proven.
Well, I did both and I'm about to get my hands sticky. Thanks for your 2 cents nonetheless.

Lot of proof out there for not flushing like tell me of another crop you know of that gets flushed... nutrients are not stored in the buds of the plant but in the leaves.. are you smoking the leaves?.. anyway as for the light thing prolonged lack of light is a breeding ground for mould so i just don't bother.. so none of what I said is bro science but facts.. anyway flush away if you think it's needed. Not flushed in about 4 years now out of the 15 or so years of growing so not bro science more like tried and tested science..

But I do understand when everyone says to flush and you have this one guys saying don't he/me comes across as a crazy guy haha.. all is IMO ..

Happy Growing peeps

Lol don't worry I'll be that other guy saying it :). Much like yourself I don't see a point in really debating it, but its always worth trying to share what gives us the best results, and I don't flush either.

I encourage everyone to try both techniques but you have to give both techs a fair chance in a fair blind test if you want the truth. I've been growing since 2005 and have tried lots of different experiments, a few in soil, but most in hydro. If you want to do a dark period give it a try, but without doing lab tests on your bud you won't notice the difference and even then its small. Do you understand the idea behind the dark period, what its supposed to do?

I tried flushing multiple crops and partial crops to see the differences in flavor or quality. Once I learned to grow better, and dry properly the quality and flavor of my weed went up. Flushing never impacted it at all.

Now you might say i'm just a guy that doesn't know what good weed tastes like, or I'm biased and can't tell the difference. But your wrong, My weed gets praised by patients, dispensary owners, compassion club members and managers, and all my friends but none of those people know I grow it so I know they aren't just being nice. The ONLY complaint I've ever had about my weeds taste came from another grower that specifically knows I don't flush. He always complained and told be I needed to flush for better weed. Well one day I told him hey guess what I started flushing this last crop, you should come try it. So he did and he raved about how much better it tasted. Well the kicker here is I never flushed it.....It was all in his head just like anyone else that thinks harvest flushing benfits the harvest.

There is nothing scientific about flushing at all it is the definition of broscience.

Cheers for being the other guy on this haha, i used to flush my self and did it for years but research tells me it isn't needed and my weed says it isn't as well.

The only time a fluch is needed is if you fucked some shit up and your in soil/coco

20h light for cutting and seedlings....
18h light for veg...
12/12 for flower( been thinking 13/12 near the end maye give some increase in yield but not tried it yet)

always learning always improving things...

I don't flush unless I smell a stink, which is a great indicator of a problem. But, there are a few things that need to happen in order to skip flushing. To me, flushing just wastes water, and nutrients.

Doing these things will help keep your water, and roots, from going sour
  • Keep the water below 70 degrees
  • Make sure the water isn't exposed to constant light
  • Do not overfeed
  • Use a large reservoir to increase the amount of water in the system
  • Make sure plenty of dissolved oxygen is making it to all parts of the root balls, meaning the center-most parts

Sniff your water everyday. If there's any odor, and you'll know the stink when you smell it, you'll want to flush right away to prevent root rot from forming. I flush by draining, filling and running for an hour, draining, and filling again.

Hope that helps :)

The key to running a healthy rdwc system is temps.. use a chiller myself set at 17C(62.5) and keep the nutrients moving.. i never get smelly roots or rot but i am water falling to all sites with a 8000 to 9000l/h pumping to only 4 sites so rot or heat are not an issue.. don't even know what the rot smell is like and thank f*%k.

All i do with regards to nutrients is taper the strength off in the last 7 to 10 days by just topping up with water so not to see excessive yellowing are signs of starvation. never flush unless you have issues that call for it IMO.

Peace out and Happy growing

It didn't seem to have any effect To my observations.. it seems like a bit of an urban myth to me... I don't see any harm in lowering nutrients through the last 2 weeks if anything to save costs by not dumping unused nutes.
I think a properly fed plant clean from any topical treatments that has been dried and cured well will have optimum taste without flushing... Guess I'm part of that club now.

What is the supposed benefit or myth to giving a dark period prior to harvest?
THCA is degraded during the daylight hours (also being produced) but in the dark it's only produced and not degraded. The theory is that after the dark period there will be slightly higher THCA percentages than after a few hours of light exposure. If there is a difference it is tiny and I wouldn't be concerned with it.

Cool thanks! I have some Grape Ape, it's about 4 weeks out, my first grow, check it out:
