questions about lights

hey guys,

i have a question: i just put a seed in soil. should i put them under the lights already, or wait until it comes out of the soil?
and do i really have to use cfl bulbs. i have some that are pretty bright and warm..

thanks for answering!

U don't want to put them under a HID bulb yet. The CFL bulb is ok for the seedling stage until the seed has established a good root system. After about 3 to 4 weeks u can start vegging under a HID bulb. Good Luck and happy Smoking :bigjoint:

Once the seed sprouts it will need the light right away. Depending on your light set up( what lights your using ) this will determine how far away you want your lights. You will want them close if using cfl as so they will not stretch. And yes cfls will be needed all tough I recommend using hps after the seedling stage. Much better quality when using hps and mh compared to cfls. Good luck. Hope that helps

^WRONG

The seedling would do much better under the HID!
I have always started all my seedlings under a 1000w MH.
You dont need to worry about the HID being too much light with seedlings only with clones.
So it make no sense to start them under much dimmer lights.
The only thing seedlings need to grow is water and light no food is needed as a seedling.
So they are using mostly light to grow I would give them the best light you can.

The CFL's would do ok but the HID would blow them away as far as growth goes.

If I can, I will start out seedlings under flourescent. I have also started them straight under MH. I prefer giving them time to fully open before turning on the MH.

I don't think the seedling will do "much better" under hid than a good set of flouros. And in most cases if your just starting out why use a 1000 watt when you could use something more efficient with same great success. I guess everyone has there own way of doing things I have used both methods but I found I can control stretch better with flouros for the first week then place them in the perimeter of the garden. Just careful if going start under 1000 watt how close they are to your light. Whatever works for you and makes you happy all that matters. Good luck hope that helps

Been doing it for 15+ years , the reason I start under a 1000w is thats what I veg my plants under.
And yes they do MUCH BETTER and with a 1 month veg which is plenty of time for the plant to mature I get around 1lb per plant.

My seedlings are started in the same room as my vegging plants.
No special treatment is given to seedlings they get the same light, air movement........
They are a ways from the light 3'ish but still are not shaded at all.
Sure CFL's work ok for vegging a plant but they will grow much faster and in my experience mature faster under a HID.
So IMO they are MUCH better.

cfl is just easier and cheaper to start but nothing wrong with HID at all especially if you start a bunch. i just like using CFLs because it gives me a 3rd area of lights one for clones/seeds one for veg and one for flower.

I start with CFL's for about 2 weeks as I don't have a MH yet......I have tried growing seedlings under HPS and it works okay, but allot of electricity to run them compared to the CFL

A couple ?s 1.What light percentage should I use in veg stage was told 18-6 Does that sound right?2. I have my plants under 500 watts in veg will switch too 1000 when flowering is 500 too much for 5 week old clones?
