Question re safely removing a male from the AG

Thanks to comments on Newbie Central yesterday, I discovered that one of my two plants was a male. Is there a safe way to remove it without damaging the root structure of the remaining plant (since they were entwined)?

Without much thought I just pulled it out upward through the grow hole roots and all. Later I wondered what root damage I had inflicted on the remaining one.

The only other route I can think of is to cut the plant off at the base of its stem and wait for dead roots to show in the tank and try to fish them out.

The remaining plant does look OK, but I worry that I could have lost it also by what I did.

Well i do know some people have actually untangled the roots them selves, i just cut my males at the lowest point possible, then just cover up the grow space, the roots never died and i didnt have any problems the rest of the grow

Thanks, Froman. I'll do that next time (which of course I hope wont happen). Glad to know I probably wont have a bunch of rotting roots to worry about.
