I have some plants that are 5 1/2 weeks old and they are getting to tall. If I top them will this stop the upward growth and make them grow out more. And when I top I cut the very top split and only one side? I know the name TOPPING explains what to do I just want to make sure.

Ya could try bending the top down and that will promote the lower branches to grow. Its less stressful on the plants. How it will react after topping depends on the strain.

When you say bend the top down how far should I bend it? And for how long do I keep it like that?

tying a plant u can keep it that way indefinatly, its to allow more light to reach the lower branches and it keeps it low like in the picture

what are you gonna do when they start flowering? Do you have another place to grow them?

only top it during veg but to get any real growth from it is to let it go another few weeks needs time to heal from topping and grow its new branches that can take a little while.

I have 7 foot ceiling height but was just thinking of topping them to make them bushier and develop more bud sites. Right now they are 5 1/2 weeks old and are 22inches tall
