question about getting rid of gnats

I got gnats in my grow room this is my first grow and I put sand on top of my soil. How long do I leave the sand on there? And can I water them while the sand is on there? Thanks!:leaf:

Don't water so much and the gnats will die. Put a small fan so it blows over the top of the pots, gently and the problem will go away. You can also by some yellow sticky strips just about anywhere.

Gnats are easy to control.

Get Bacillus Thuringiensis for caterpillar larvae. It us usually just called BT and make sure you get the kind that kills caterpillar larvae as it is the only one that will work. Follow the instructions on the bottle and at the same time spray your room with a flying insect killer. There are some that are even OMRI organic listed, so you know they are safe. Any good hydro store should have everything you need.

If necessary, repeat process until you see no more gnats.

I hope this helps.

Ok but I have already put the sand on there? Is that ok? Can I water them with the sand on there? Will it hurt the plants if the sand sinks into the soil when I water them?

I don't know about the sand. I wouldn't think so, but maybe someone who knows for sure will chime in. Woodsmaneh also made a good point, you may be watering them a bit much and making the environment "ripe" for the larvae.

I should have asked... How much of a problem is it? If there are just a few then you may not need to use the BT. If you have lots and lots, then the BT/spray solution should fix your issue.

you can leave the sand awhile it wont hurt anything. i tried the sand and it worked pretty well. didnt eliminate them all but it definitely helped. i wouldnt worry to much about it they wont hurt your plants. the only time they pose a big risk is if there setting up camp on your small cuttings and seedlings.

It depends on watering... I grow in smart pots (fabric pots) so there is 2 ways I water when I use the sand...my bigger plants I just suck it up and top feed....takes a little bit longer as you have to wait for the water to filter through the sand...the other method I use (which is way quicker) is to drop my plants into a bucket of water with nutes...since I have fabric pots, the water soaks into the whole root base rather quickly.

It is a pain to water though...not going to lie, but this is a great solution that has worked great for me without using harsh pesticides.
