hey,
i just moved to a house where an old lady died and she grew flowers and stuff and she left a bunch of fluorescent shop lights 4' tubes. i was wondering how many of these should i put in my closet for 3 plants? they are 40w cool whites and some full spectrum lights. this is my first grow and im a wicked noob haha. also how bad is it going to stink because i still live with my mom. she doesnt care much but i dont want to stink up the house. will a fan and an open window be enough? or should i invest in something better?
thanks,

4' tubes are fine and what I prefer, for three plants you can veg under 2 of them, 80 watts. Cool white or full spectrum will work.

No matter what you do you will want to use at least a carbon filter, there are some cheap easy to build DIY ones on this site.

Remember when you get to flowering stage you are going to want to get an HPS light.

OK, the shop lights are no good for growing anything but seedlings and clones. You would need a bank of 8 of them to grow any decent amount of weed, and that would be a sea of green of very short plants. Cool white are poor grow lights you want Daylight AKA 6500K. I don't know what your full spectrum are, Gro Lux ?
see this linked chart for more info: https://www.rollitup.org/attachments/cfl-growing/240662d1226605588-5000k-vs-6500k-hortgraph2.gif

wow dude you really like reppin that inaccurate chart dont you? how bout you walk into walmart, look at their fluoro tubes, locate the cool white ones, ok now just take a really good look at the color spectrum of the lights, how bout this, to save you some time i will tell you for the SECOND time that they emit light in the 6500K spectrum, i have four of them in my basement, they emit blueish light, if your chart and subsequently you were the correct one here, the cool white lights would emit a more pure white color, but as most people would logically conclude you are not right, thus the blue packaging most "cool white" fluoro tube are sold in. also i can tell you really dont know what you are talking about because i have met SEVERAL seasoned growers with consistently high yielding crops that use fluoro tubes for vegging.
oh and ps last time i checked the daylight spectrum fluoro lights are the ones that emit light at 4200K, but hey what the hell does the manufacturers specs have on your almighty "chart" .......
nobody listen to this guy. dude who started this thread- your cool whites are gunna be fine for vegging, just keep in mind they generate almost no heat. if the bulbs are 4ft and 40w, you have t12 bulbs and reflectors for future reference. for three plants four of those lights should do you just fine for the first month + of veg time, you could flower with those lights if you get several cfl's for side lighting and switch the bulbs over to the 2700K "warm white" bulbs. good luck on the grow

The International Standards Organization (ISO) states
6500 K = Daylight
4100 K = Cool White
2700 K = Warm White

I actually have grown with these things, not just "talked" to several growers.
questioner, you decide who not to listen to.
