I still use Perlite personally. Pumice is the best source of aeration as it provides trace minerals in conjunction with doing exactly what Perlite does, the issue with Pumice is that it's pricey unless you happen to have a local source for it. Rice hulls aren't too bad either in terms of price, I almost bought that same 50lb bag (From BuildaSoil right?) as it's a pretty decent deal for sure.

The problem with Rice hulls is they decompose, and you absolutely do NOT want your source of aeration/drainage to decompose on you as you will run into problems in the future.

Unless you have a local/cheap source for Pumice, Perlite is going to be your absolute best bet. Some hydro stores sell 4 cuft bags for $20-25 and you simply can't beat that price.

Our local material yard has 3/8" pumice for something like $90 a yard.

On my small scale, 1cu.yd., I used bagged GS-1. But that's too expensive for 7 yards.
