what is the the reason,why,when and how to trim and prune your plants?I have read alot of confliting stories stories on the matter can you guys help thanks

Well, you're going to get conflicting stories, because everybody has his own idea. Best thing to do is use the Advanced Search function located at the top of the page, use keyword 'Pruning' and from the dropdown box select Titles only (or something like that). That will give you a list of discussions with Pruning in the title. Go through them and learn what people think, and hopefully you'll see a few examples. A few very general rules are make your cut just above the node, and do not prune once flowering has started. There are a couple Stickies in the Advanced Marijuana Cultivation forum that address forms of pruning and training.

Hey growin big, welcome to RUI!
wagontail is correct, there are so many threads on here with the info that you want that a search will give you more info than you can read. At the same time starting a new hobby and researching on a new forum can be daunting, so I'll go over a few things and if you ask some questions on issues that you're not clear on we can develop an FAQ on trimming an pruning. There is a simple grow system in the Grow Lab thread linked below.

Trimming and Pruning: My Philosophy
Never remove a leaf or branch unless you are training the plant to grow a certain way. Move, tuck, tie down - each leaf is a solar panel and nutrient sink that we want to keep on the plant as long as possible. We do all that we can to maximize light output - we should do the same to maximize the plant's ability to absorb light.

Topping is a common technique to produce more than one stem - if the main stem (meristem) is clipped then the two branches directly below the cut (the node) will become the new meristems. Two shorter stems may produce more bud than one long stem, depending on the strain.
Topping is a great strategy for keeping tall plants short but does not work well with some shorter indica strains.
