Proposal: The intentional and isolated application of male pollen to ward off hermaphrodites.

Hi,
So, the idea is based off cannabis producing bananas, and going herm. From what I understand, a large part of this is because it's a last -ditch effort for the plant to spread its genes. If I were to pollinate a single bud, manually, I feel like that particular bud would have seeds, but the plant would be happy. Is this a possible way to combat hermaphrodites? Are their any studies on this? I cannot find any.

Over stressing a plant will increase the risk of herms, Even nutrients can increase risk.
Don't think breeding with male will stop this.

I've heard some viewpoints from very experienced growers that females sometimes will go herm if they don't get any pollen in an attempt to spread their genes, they get desperate, and go herm. Or so the theory goes...If you just left a popcorn bud and pollinated that, wouldn't that bud just have the seeds, and the plant would think it had been pollinated successfully?

This is about tricking the plant into not over-stressing when end of life comes. I'm not taking into consideration additional stress factors.

Hermi is a "genetic" mutation that comes from "ancestral" breeding. The best you can do is not increase the risk of a major breakout. I have a "King Kush" (GHS) that always has a few,but it doesn't get worse.
It's gonna "nanner" whether you toss pollen or not.

Personal experience dictates this is not the case. Check out the threads "there's a crack in everything" (humanrob) and "Hermies, most have no idea" (kingrow1), for the record I dont agree with much of what kingrow has to say on the topic but I think some others posted some valuble info in the thread.

Edit, the plant may know it is polinated but it didnt stop the herm tendancy for me.

Thanks for the references, I will check those out. Much appreciated. In your experience, what % (roughly) of your plants go herm on you?

I have 37 in a 5x5. I can't check them all anymore daily. I have to take them out of the grow space and some don't get intense light for over an hour or so. I don't want to take away from their flower time under the lights.

Their mom is their father, as well, which is why I'm worried. Genetics seem to be good, but the mother DID herm. However, I think it's because of a webcam I put in their last grow. The IR light pointed directly at the hermed plant. I looked up the nm, and heard 700 should be safe for cannabis. That is the wavelength of the IR light on the camera. But, here's to hoping that herm was due to environmental stress
(the light on the cam), cause I ended up with like, 200 females seeds of this strain I love.

I think I could make any mj plant go herm if I wanted to. I have had herms (nanners or non female preflowers) in every strain that I I have run from seed (at least 20 by now) but not every plant.

IMO you can have fully expressed genetic herms with no environmental stress playing a factor OR you have plant that the genetic hermephrodism is allowed due to stress. What stress triggers it can vary, low humidity, uv, too much light, not enough light, overwater, underwater, salt nutrient toxicity........whatever you can think of and whatever combination of those factors actually pushes over some limit, and done, you have a herm.

@SSGrower Well, I have some bad news. I went and checked again after I replied previously. The first 3 plants were herms. i found a 4th and a 5th after a couple plants. At that point, I just stopped looking. AT that point it's a herm out of every 5 plants. I don't want that number to go any higher. Is it okay if I just grow them out and deal with the seed. this was never meant to sell anyway. I tried to look after them the best I could. I did try a new watering method where I gwatered them every day, but much less. They seemed to like it. I had to go that route, because I watered them all off to a 20% drain and 4 days later, some still had ~half the amount of weight they had when they were first watered. Others felt dry. I bit off more than I could chew, but I think with clones it would have been a success.

Do you have light of some kind in your dark period?Leaking under door or something? Same strain? Or multiple strains showing nanners?

I think these are selfed seeds?

A plant with a few nanners is not a hermie.
This is perhaps just my interpretation of the vernacular. I don't know for sure that pollen produced from a nanner is viable is that what you consider a herm, or are late season indica nanners herms? Perhaps I am just not using the term properly.

Depends on your situation as to wether or not its worth it. how much longer you have, have seeds already started to form, do you mind smoking seeded bud? and probably some pollen too?
You may have time to stop the progression if you correct stress factors (watering but also look at the whole environment ). Pluck the male flowers off with wet tweezers, mist plants with water before moving...

Thanks for the advice. I'll do this tomorrow. It will take a while. Won't that male organs grow back? How often will I need to do this? Most of the buds are still nice and white and fat. I started looking cause I noticed some browning pistils which made me suspicious. But the lights were going out in 30 minutes, so I couldn't go through the whole tent.Keep in mind, I am only at week 3. DOesn't seem worth the extra effort, as I really don't mind smoking seeded bud. Just take the seeds out and roll a fat one. Works for me.
Thanks!

I got these seeds from a plant that went herm in my last grow. i though it it was environmental factors. Which is why I ran the risk of growing these seeds out, cause I knew they were fem. i expected a few herms, but not this many. I sat in the grow tent though during that grow for 10 minutes and couldn't see my hand an inch away from my face. So, not light leaks. It's possible though, as the tent stresses over time, it loosens up, like the zipper, etc. I'll be sure to do another light test when its empty before I start my next one. Some genetics just throw at herms like crazy though, don't they? Like was said by SS, some plants just genetically lean that way, right?. Zero stress tolerance it seems. This is the only strain that gave me problems. Had great results with another. I always said it was a finicky f'in strain. It's the church x deadhead og, they were free seeds. I germinated them after 3 of the 5 I paid for feminized failed to germinate. So, I think I just need to find a better seed-bank. I've been germinating seeds for 20 years now, Only recently cannabis. Same concept though .Pretty sure I know how to do it properly. I'll reassess all the environmental conditions. I have a dedicated dehumidifer, A/C, humidifer. I always keep it dialed in. I may have stressed these girls a little early on in veg by over-watering accidentally. And a brief period of under-feeding. But nothing I would have thought would have caused this many hermms. They already threw their pollen too, some of them.

Ball sacs or nanners? Pics would be helpful. At this point I belive you have full blown hermephrodites. Sounds like you are less than 1/2 way through flower?

You would need to do this daily but were I in the situation you describe I would not attempt to finish this run.

Sounds like you just got bad female seeds of that strain. Should get it out of rotation. Also, I only run about 9-12 plants in that area (5 x 5). I have been growing Greenpoint seeds. This is Jelly Pie

Just transplanted my clones and seedlings in my rdwc system. My gmans kush plants are starting to droop like overwatered. Kind of crinkling on the insides of leaves. Ph is about 5.5 68 degree water temp. 500 ppm....any help?
