i just installed a new cd burner but don't have any cd's to install with it the comp knows it's a cd burner but i can't burn cd's or seend anything to it, any help would be great links or anything :)

Is it usb or internal it has to have a brand somewhere open the drive

internal no brand it came out of another comp, i don't know much about computers so i pulled it out and pluged the plugs from the other into this one, thanks for not flaming or being jerks

Umm... If it just says dvd rom, it won't burn cd's... It would say burner or writer on it somewhere...

it says rewritable under compact disc, i've used it as a burner on my other comp but that comp crashed, and i've moved so i don't have the cd that came with it.

Google or ask.com or something like that i'm sure you not the only one who this happened to type into google" my new internal cd burner won't work" and see what comes up you would be amazed at how specific some questions are and the answer is there just type

There should be a model or serial number on the case of the drive. You can try to google one of those.

You see the scales in the top right corner of every post? They are for rep.

You're welcome!!

Try and clear any unused drivers or old CD ROM drivers from your windows install

Run cmd (opens the command prompt)
Enter set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

This will allow the next setting which will make it possible for you to see them...

Open Device Manager
Click the View menu, select Show hidden devices (must be done each time you open the device manager)
Devices not present will have a lightened greyed (or washed out) icon
Right click the greyed out item and select uninstall to remove the device's drivers

i can;t see why it wouldn;t work with the default windows drivers.. I don;t think I've had to install a CD or DVD driver for the last few years

verry helpfull, however i suck :) so the cd rom works i can rip cd's to the comp but can't burn with windows media player, it says to connect a burner and restart, the dvd player is showing the dvd but says it needs a decoder. i tried to use the command prompt but with no success. i did take the burner out and found the model # cb523c. i tried to download some drivers but i'm not verry good at finding them and dont want to get a virus if anyone has a safe site it would be helpfull thankyou

dis: Black BenQ Combo CD ReWriter/DVD CB523C, 16X DVD-ROM, 32X CD-RW, 52X CD-ROM, Dual Cooling System. OEM

You see the part I underlined? That tells what the drive will do. 16x dvd-rom, it reads (not writes) DVD's at 16x (speed), 32x cd-rw it will re-write a CD at 32x, 52x CD-rom it will read a CD at 52x. That drive will not write a DVD. It will write a CD though. You can RIP to your computer with any kind of drive. Hope that answers it.
