Problems already!

Grow it and roll it!

Well-Known Member
Hey all, 2 of my plants have been growing for about 17 days now, and problems are showing up. The older leaves are light green, almost yellow, one of the tips is brown, the center is brown, the stem is red, and the leaves are curling.. For my set up, I'm growing in a container with aluminum foil on the sides, 2 CFL's, one is 3500k, 120W, the other 2400k lower W value, and the plants are very close to the lights, within an inch or 2. I'm using Miracle Grow Garden Soil for Flowers and Vegetables which has continuous release plant food that feeds up to 3 months, and yesterday I fed them some miracle grow nutrients thinking the problem was due to being underfed.. I don't know the ph value of my water, but it's tap water. Ventilation is satisfactory. Please help; any opinions, comments, criticisms, tips or whatever are welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Grow it and roll it!

Ok, i'll go set it to darkness right now. Thank you very much. By the way, the light is on for 24 hours right now, does this have something to do with it? Any ideas on nutrients?

there are diff things you could try like whats the temp of the room? If they are just 17 days old whatever is in the mg soil is enough food for them for a while. What kind of light cycle are they on?
But its prolly a combo of everything: Its too hott in ur room, there is too many nutes, or the light cycle.
17 day old plants should be geting 24 hours of light or 20/4 they need to be getting lots of blue light, they should be bettween 75 and 85 degrees F. They dont look too bad, but how much do you water them?

I water them usually once daily. The lights have been on for 24 solid hours, but the lights are off now to give them a rest. I think I'm going to switch to 20/4 tomorrow. I'm not sure what the temp is unfortunately, but tomorrow in my travels I will get a thermometer. Thanks for everything so far:mrgreen:

Hey, I've got a strange idea here. Will it help my plants to add perlite to the mg soil, and use my air pump that I have to aerate the soil? I could take the air line coming from the pump and put it right in the soil to get more O2 to the roots!! What do you think?

I dont think that will do anythin, MG has perlite in it already. when they get bigger a good trick is to get seltzer water and spray them plants once a day. When it drys off the leaves the co2 will get absorbed by the plant

FOIL = BAD can you say heat stress? switch to mylar or white paint

USE distilled water tap water has crap in it

The MG soil he has is pure shit and has no perlite in it( sorry no offense) read the ingridients, also chemical ferts effect taste in the end so its best to use organics...
also move the the lights higher say 6 to 8 inches above em
your plants are showing signs of nute burn already and heat stress and let the dirt dry before u water again if they somehow survive the miracle chemical grow

I thought all Mg had perlite in it. just get diff MG if it does not any And I dont think that whats in the MG is killing them. I have my whole grow room covered in foil and I have a IR thermomiter and the foil never gets hot, it stays the same temp as my white walls. The only way to tase chemicals is if you used them right before harvest. Yiou are supposed to stop ferltizing about a month before you harvest, to give the plant a chance to flush out the ferliizers before you smoke it! you plants will be fine just maybe switch soils But I strongly Recamend MG soil It is the best

OK I have never had a problem with foil, and An IR themomiter does not take air temp it takes surface temp and my whole room has foil in it and my plants never get above 81 F ever. Ihave checked the surface temp often and foil stays at 1 degree hotter than my white walls and I have never seen a hot spot on the foil or plants

I know first hand what foil can do and if you like slow growth and droopy plants, go ahead and use it, 81 isnt too hot either, but no telling what his temps are either... the ones i had under foil turned male so maybe i had bad luck

that so weird I think you should def get a IR themomiter, they are $20 at radio shack and it really has made a diff. No more freaking out on hot days I can easily see how hot my walls are, and what the temp of each plant is, the soil and water you give it. It was well worth the $20

I've heard the foil causes hot spots, but idk, i use white paint. I added 1/5 pearlite to my mg soil before transplanting, and i get wonderful drainage, no wet soil problems, etc. hell after transplant i'm having to water mine a little bit more due to the pearlite, but I dont like moist soil(gnats, bugs etc..) Also run out and get u a thermometer/hygrometer combo. ul be happy u did. also get urself a ph tester, I bought a cheapo one from lowes(5$), and im not happy with it. I orderd one off of ebay that cost me around 35 dollars, but it test soil mouisture, light, npk levels, and ph. Im just saying spend the extra money on meters, then ul be happy u did in the long run. Im stuck with stupid test tubes, tablets, cheapo soil ph meters, etc.. but I learned a lesson on that. just buy the GOOD stuff to begin with. Isnt that how it is with ANYTHING? Best of luck on ur grow.

my ph test are from a pet store for fish tanks, the problem with getting a thermometer/hydrometer is the only check the air! If you want to know what temp your soil, water, and actual plants are you need and IR thermometer or a temp gun. Temp guns are more acurate but they cost more, mine I got at radio shack it was $20 and It solves so many problems, that I have had
