Power failure (DWC)

My power was out for about an hour, so therefor my plants were all without air the entire time. The mothers, some vegging plants and some recently cut clones were all without bubbles.

How long can roots be submerged in water without air in a DWC system without issue? The power was out here for 50-60 minutes. Should I expect some dead roots? Other issues?

If it was only an hour, you should be fine. You may expect to see the roots do some crazy things from the stress (they were practically drowning) but you should fine and they should recover with some TLC

You wont have any issues with such a short time. All the o2 wouldnt have been depleted that quickly and even if it were plants will cope for a lot longer before suffering. Hows things since filling the res?

Yeah, the roots on a couple plants started looking a bit dark today (this happened last night), thats why I asked.

thx

That's comforting to know.

Things are much better now with the higher water level. Thank you!

My local petshop has one of these for sale and for the price I think its handy dandy in a scenario like yours. (Especially if power is occasionally a problem)

Sweet. Nice and inexpensive. I saw another one once upon a time that would plug into a wall outlet and then it would turn on automatically if the power went out. That would be even better.

You can aerate your water by stirring it or by lifting and dunking the roots. Also, opening the cover will help as getting air to the surface is key. More O2 enters the water from the air stones stirring effect than from the bubbles themselves.

Anyway, your plants can live for a long time with the pumps down - we are talking weeks. However, root rot can develop. But one hour will have no effect at all. Keep your res at 68 deg or you will be sorry.

I fart in my bucket when the power goes out..Hey, saved my girls numerous times. Who needs electricity when you have beans? jk

68? I've read several times that 65 was optimal.. :wall:
