I would think they would need the cooperation of the site to even get your IP

No, there are plenty of programs that show other people's IPs.

Havent you ever seen the little emoticon holding a sign saying what your IP is, what area you are in, what service you are using? Used to be all over the place. A lot of sites banned people from using them, but getting other people's IPs is child's play.
