I have he same problem with my plants...i bough a book 2 weeks ago and it says that i doesn't depend only of how close you have he light...it depends also from he fertilizers you use and the room temperature..most common is the room temperature..i would suggest to use a fan if you don't and check the temperature at the high of your top bud......
what lamp are you using?
i am using a 600w HPS and i had the lamp in 40 cm distance and he temperature near the top bud was around 35-39 C now i am using a fan and i have the lamp in 45cm distance and the demperature at the top bud is now 29 degreess.....

^^^Should be at or under 27 degrees. Your plants are getting too much heat, which stunts growth. I'm pretty sure the thread starter isn't using a 600W bulb though. If heat isn't an issue, you need more light.

How many watts are your CFLs? If they are the little 20 or so watt guys then your plant is probably stretching toward it and trying to get more light. The problem is that the bulb is so weak that the plant thinks it can get even closer to the light source, even when its right on top of it!

I had this same problem and went out and bought a 65 watt CFL with a housing for $40. That mother is bright as hell and all my plants stopped growing tall and started getting bushy. You need to make a good investment on lights! Your going to want something better than fluorescent when you flower too!

where did you get a CFL of that wattage. i looked at lowes and couldnt find one. that like 250 wat equivalent right.

currently im using 4 24 watt CFLs and 3 2' flouro tube grow lights. they seem to be working fine but if i could get like two of those big CFLs then i would be set.

sry about jacking your thread. ill give some input. if your lights are not less than 3 inches from the top of the plant then youll get more stretching. also stretching can be caused just by the strain. usually middies bag seed will stretch a little more than others. also i have had mutants that generally stretch a little more than normal plants.

i looked at your grow log and it says you only have one bulb thats 23w CFL on the plant. get two more of that same thing. and make sure you put them really close. like 2 inches away from the top. get a good fan to keep the temp at about 75 Deg F. dont fertilize until at least three weeks into the grow.

simple answer... your plants are GOING to stretch naturally wether your light is close or not... Here's my two options for you... if you're not flowering, then top it and it will promote more horizontal growth than vertical.. oorrr just LST them and that'll help as well.

I have a 4wk vegged sativa that tripled in height once I put her into flowering... so I tied that bitch down and been gravy since! Also remember, that when you LST your plants, it's brings the main cola down level to the side branches... and if you keep up with it, like tieing it again when it grows more to keep it level with actually prolly help you yeild a slight more since all (well most) of the bud sites are getting equal light spread across your even branch height...

just a thought, these were the routes I took... just REMEMBER if you have your plants close to the light, WATCH IT closely, cuz like I said, whether you want them to or not, they are gonna vertically grow, juss nature! So make sure they don't grow into the light and burn.

Good Luck!

I bought the 65 watt CFL at Home Depot. They have an 85W version too. Just go to the outdoor lighting section where they have all the HPS and MH shit. They are like security lights.
