LOL.....when I read the grow are info and lighting I came up with a totally opposite suggestion than justugh.
While you don't have a ton of floor space, you do have plenty of vertical space. I would go with one plant...a fem will save you time.
If this is your first grow, you want a plant that's pretty durable, can suffer newbie mistakes, and end up with a good yield. Click on my "Mataro' Blue" grow in my signature. It's a plant that would fit nicely in your space, and I can tell you that you won't be disappointed.
As far as topping and such.....first grows should be kept simple. Don't try to do too many things at once. Doing one topping about 5-6 weeks in veg will increase your yield a bunch. Keep in mind your floor space limitations as you don't want to top too many times.
As far as vegging with an HPS.....well, justugh is correct. Plants like vegging under 6000K-6500K spectrum....HPS is around 2700K. Fortunately, setting up a correct light-spectrum, especially for one plant is pretty cheap. Get a couple 100w CFL's and hang-em above your plants. That'll get you to your flower stage and your HPS light.
