Pinning bags- should I move them to a mono tub?

So, I hope someone can help here.

I have two, 2.5 pound bags that are starting to pin. There are pins on the sides of the bags, too. I really don't like the bags and I don't like all those side pins getting squished.

I want to move on to mono tubs for my next run, but I was wondering if it is advisable to carefully cut the bags and remove the brick and place it into a mono tub? It seems to me that the side pins would grow better and it would give more room overall for development. I don't want to screw it up, however.

Good idea, or not?

I'm going to post some pics and info on what I did. It seems to be doing REALLY well!

OK, I am going to document this here, in case anyone wants to check out an easy and relatively cheap way to grow your favorite mushrooms.

A little background... I grow green plants and have since the 80's. I few years ago I started going to Lockn' (music festival in VA) and got back into shrooms, unexpectedly, lol.

I decided to try my hand at growing and bought a "kit". It had all kinds of tubs, heaters lights, etc- all garbage I did not need. I read up on the BRF Tek and had some success and some total failures, hehe. But, I was learning along the way and don't regret a minute of it. Then came my interest in "bulk" growing.

I again bought a "kit", but not like the stupid one I initially used. This came with 2 rye berry bags, sterilized with self healing injection points in the bag. I knocked them up with some B+ and Teachers and followed the directions for then colonizing the mushroom compost. This was 5 pounds, also in sterilized bags and was shipped later, so it was fresh. The info for this can be found here:

Kit: https://www.shroomsupply.com/mushroom-grow-kits/mushroom-cultivation-kits
Directions: https://www.shroomsupply.com/easiest-mushroom-grow-kit-instructions

I also bought the casing material.

Once the bags of grain/compost mixture were ready for pinning, I took them carefully out of the bags and put them in a clear tote with 1 inch holes, filled with poly. I ended up with 6 holes, 2 in front and 2 in back, with one on each side.

Later I put down a some foam (actually, the leftover stuff from clone machine inserts, to lift it off the tub a little. Not sure if it needed this step, but it lifted the cakes so they don't sit in water.) Above is the first flush and it produced 1.75 dried ounces.

I'm in the middle of the second flush right now:

This the same bunch after harvesting:

So, I think I really like this technique. So far, no contams, easy to use and cheap. I just ordered 2 more rye berry bags at $5.99 each. I'll order the compost once the new bags are ready and go with the same setup.

I hope this helps someone out there. I also am a member at shroomery, but I don't post there very much, lol. I figured it might help here, but no some much over there :)

The second flush was just under an OZ dried. So, I mentioned I raised the cakes so they were not sitting in moisture. Yesterday I noticed a pin coming out from the bottom, so I carefully lifted it and I found a shit load of pins underneath! So, it seems that by lifting them up, it allowed the bottom to pin. I rolled the cakes onto their sides last night- this is what they look like this morning:

So, I don't know if I should not have elevated the cakes (pins would have set up on the top again), or if I have stumbled upon something that is a great idea! Any opinions?

I wonder if it's related to the direction the mycilium was growing? I'm a noob to growing shrooms so pardon my ignorance but you would think the pins would start from the oldest established myci. so I'm scratching my head here, my first and only cake so far pinned from bottom or top? 1029171443a.jpg
I may flip one of my cakes to the side and see if the flush is fuller that way..

They'll usually pin in gaps like that due to the microclimate created in said gap, its up to your personal preference to leave them there or not but it won't hurt either way. You can also fruit right in the bag I used to use a tek called "major myc's methods of madness" using bags with great success even as a noob, Google it up and check it out. Great work for a new guy keep it up!
