Picking a Boy

I want to try and develope a better strain (sort of a hobby). Everyone identifies males and pulls them out. But, how do you plant breeders look at several males and decide which is better for breeding back to the best females?

but I applaud your efforts to develop a better strain.
I think there are some pretty good ones around already
there's always room for more

One of the things you may want to look for in a male is one that is short and stocky. I also remember reading another breeding article, where the breeder looked for those thick ring of growth around where the branches grow from the new nodes. (see pic). I don't know why? Perhaps to support heavy buds? Dunno, but that would make sense to me.

What about smell, you may want a non smelly male, or a smelly one, depending on what you like.

i like those fat rings. i think they help support big branches. i think if you see fat rings you can assume fat buds. :blsmoke: just my assumption. :peace:

i have the room. :mrgreen::blsmoke::peace:

what will you be breeding? what stock will your male come from?
Right now I have White Widow plants and I wanted to see if I could produce a few seeds that are as good as the mother or better than the mother. No exotic crosses or grand designs. Just trying to get seeds that are as good as the mommas.

If you've got white widow male and female from the same stock then you should good to get some (F1?) seeds.

But two identicle plants (of opposite sexes) will have a variety of results. So I was just looking for input on male selection. Which, as far as I am aware, is not a topic for discussion presently. And maintaining or improving the strain should always be the goal.

So thanks to everyone who chipped in.

nope, your not going to have F1 seeds. f1's are from when your breeding two different genetics together. i have f1 seeds from breeding an icexWW plants. im not sure if the plants both have to be IBL though......:?

edit- after doing a little research, both strains have to be IBL to get F1 seeds... thats what i just read anyways :D

Interesting. It is hard to find information in a usable format. Can you give us all a useful link?

What is it when you breed a male and female seeds from the same plant then?
say you have NL, you generally dont know how many times its been crossed with itself... so it could be an F29 or F234..... say it was a F29 when the plant got to you, then you breed a male to a female you than make F30 seeds....

the more times you cross it with itself the more stable the gene pool becomes, thusly the seeds you plant will be more uniform.

but if you cross, say lowrider with a purple haze(a sativa) you produce F1 seeds.... since these strains are SOOO different the seeds will greatly vary from one seed to the other.... one seed might be autoflowering, another might look more sativa, and another might look somewhat inbetween.

now say you find a plant that you like and want to make some seeds in its image because it was autoflowering and had some nice purple haze attributes to it also. what you do is back cross it with another plant that looks similar to it and make seeds. you keep cuttings of the mom and use these cuttings to keep pollinating with a male plant from her offspring.... so now you are taking a male plant from her seeds and keep pollinating her, and so on and so forth.... each time its genetics resemble the mother plant more and more.... this is know as IBL or stabilizing the strain...
ummm ya, maybe ill find another link to better explain..

i was actually looking for a different breeding link that was pretty useful, but i guess i never bookmarked it:cry:
anyways

breeding is really complicated and im not a expert at it by any means... i have studied it a little bit, but just the tip of the iceberg... its almost like eugenics, except with plants.... lol..

i have only had a limited experience with breeding... this last grow was my first real go at it... im chopping most of my plants down in one week, and i will have WW, ice, WWxice, thai, thai X WW, and thai X ice....

i think you should definitely read the first two or three links, and then if your still interested go ahead and read the rest... i dont feel like reading all that right now myself.... anyways....
