You could get more lumens from three 14w LED bulbs, the kind that replace 100w incandescent. One of those bulbs puts out 1500 lm so three would be 4500 lm and all three together would cost probably $15-20. So the 4' ones are a bad deal unless you get at least 12 for the $250.

Thanks, I was struggling with the cost analysis. I didn't see the watts but saw the lumens. These look appealing but not for this purpose I guess. Many thanks!

The output is about 130 LPW which is not bad but not great by today's standards. The price is also an issue, $400 for 4 of them would provide adequate lighting for a 2'x2' but 3800 lumens/ft isn't great either.

LED bulbs have become pretty cheap, probably because of subsidies.

With led lightbulbs, can you take off the cover to increase the light given off by the leds?

Yes.
Increases light output too, but don't know by how much and I don't know if somebody has tested how much in an integrating sphere.

I think LED bulbs are very underrated.

If you're in the US (depending on how much the state subsidizes them) you can get quality bulbs for $0.5 per watt down to $0.2-0.25 per watt.
Which makes it price competitive with HPS, and there are plenty of growlogs of people who achieved 1g/w with them.

In bigger areas you just use more bulbs.

Blynx eventually makes the switch to LED bulbs (see pic) and achieves with some strains 1g/w.
Though I think he's still using somewhat older bulbs that were around 80lm/w. These days you should be able to get bulbs that are 100 lm/w.

I just priced 20000 lumens (equivalent to 4 of these) using vero 13 g7s for 160$cdn to my door, higher efficiency too.

Includes driver and heatsinks
