I'm very new to that and without much research I went out and got 2 of these guys. Will with work with growing 2-4 plants? Should I get more? Or should I go with HPS bulbs?

Thanks Everyone!

I think those produce quite a bit of heat. For that kind of heat you'd be much better off with HID. Or, if you have the money, LED's. I have one of those ^^^ in the fixture over the sink for my philodendron, I can feel the heat from it and it's far away. You won't be able to get them close enough to do any good, imo. HID produces a lot of heat as well, but they work.
And welcome to RIU!

Thanks for the input! I've seen some cheaper LEDs but I'm not sure if they're legit. Anyway if I go with the HID lights for 2 plants what watt of bulbs should I go for and how many? Thanks a ton and sorry for the newb questions.

Thanks for the welcome! Happy to be here.

Cheap ones I'm talking about:

Maybe one of the LED folks will pop in, but I don't think those cheap LED's are good for growing. A legit LED will be a few (several) hundred dollars per fixture. You can build a good one for much less if you have basic assembly skills.
What's your grow area like? Size, conditions, etc. Heat is the greatest obstacle indoor grows face, imo, so your grow space plays heavily into the type of lighting you can deploy. A 600W HID is a good choice for 4 plants, but they're hot, you'll need a way to remove the heat unless you're in a big room.

My area is an okay size I don't have exact mesurments atm but it will work. Its upstairs in the attic. The coner I'll be making for it I'll be sealed off with plastic and reflective material. There is a window near by where I'll connect vents with some fans. The air is rather cold outside so with the heat from the light it should be a good balance. For now I'll go with the single 600w as you suggested.

As you can see in this picture the roof is at a slant. I'll use the area from the printer to the wall up to the door. I can pull my plants a little further out if they get to tall.

Thanks for you help! Are these conditions okay?

Its gonna be tough in an attic area with hid and limited head room. Make sure you get a dimmable 600w ballast. If you have temp problems with the 600w bulbs you can use a 400w bulb on the same ballast dialed down. 400w hids put out a lot less heat than 600s (and a lot less light) but temps are the most important thing when growing indoors. Otherwise if you are looking into leds...area51led has a cob based fixture at a very good price point. You can grow one plant under one of those 95w lights, and have no worries of heat issues. Anyways best of luck to ya.

Yes, dimmable. I know a lot of folks discount dimming but I Iike the flexibility it offers, even if the spectrum may not be 100%. And of course, LED is the way to go if you can swing it. HID should work ok in that space with some cool air & a fan.
