Pedantic SAR question

I read a lot of stuff regarding SAR in plants, and I was wondering if I had misapprehended something that I learned in a botany class--
I learned that SAR is an immune response having to do with infectious pathogens, and isn't technically in operation against pests, only the pathogens they vector for.
Not to say this process is particularly well understood or anything like that... Especially not by me.

But I'm really just asking if it's being used as a general term for plant autoimmune functions as a whole? At least typically?

The whole thing is very nebulous and I'm starting to get my head around it, but there's these pieces of information in my brain that don't quite fit the model...
