i ve always use canadian sphagnum peat moss bale at the homedepot, sometimes i use miracle-gro s sphagnum peat moss quart as well...if i want to grow few pots. so i ve been looking for pro mix , they usually sell at the hydro store.

pro mix is sphagnum peat moss with stuff (perlite, sand, etc.) mixed into it, mostly for aeration.

^^^^^^

I make my own mix, but the peat moss I use is from the same company (Premier), that makes ProMix.

My mix just ends up being a super ProMix sort of thing. Better AND cheaper. They just charge you more to do the mixing for you. There's nothing in there that you can't duplicate yourself.

Google LC's Soiless Mix #1. That's a good basic recipe.

Soil mixes are like making Chili. Start with a basic recipe and then amend to suit your taste.
