Upon further consideration of my last post... I don't reserve my highest level of opprobrium for those poor, stupid, white rednecks that fester in the red states. For the most part, they have little choice, but time is against them. They are easily manipulated because they hang on to outdated, hateful and ultimately self-defeating beliefs and, they aren't too bright to begin with. No amount of home schooling can keep their numbers relevant for long. They are stupid - and they will die. Their children will turn away from their racist, xenophobic ideas in droves and the increasing number of better people will easily cancel out their numbers as time goes by. But in the long run, we are all dead and the critical decision that will determine the future happens this November.
Those that I really hold responsible for this mess are represented by those in my sigs below. These are people who should know better but are letting their own narrow interests guide them into playing into the hands of the enemies of democracy. They swallow every spinning lie tossed their way and let their hurt feelings and shortsightedness get in the way of realizing that we are truly at a critical time in this country. Our democracy is fighting for its very life against a would-be dictator controlled by a true-to-life hostile foreign dictator and backed by a self-serving party that has purged itself of people of conscience. There is every chance that these people will allow those forces to win in a gambit to hold their support hostage in a political game of chicken. Doubtless, one of them will stumble through here and say something like "see, you need our support, we're important. All you have to do is let one of us win the nomination to get it." The process is underway to choose a candidate. If their candidates have the support, they are free to win and lead the forces of democracy in a victory against despotic tyranny. But if they don't get what they want, they are likely to sullenly withhold their support in order to make things so bad that the uprising they long for will take place. It's a hell of a gamble and one I do not believe they will win. If we lose the next election, the mechanisms that make this a free country will be dismantled for the rest of our lifetimes.
