Packaging dates

It seems reasonable to me that if the top breeders want top dollar for their product then they should rise to the level of professionalism that insists on integrity... like the kind that would put packaging dates on their seeds...and best before dates too.

I mean...if i am goinv to spend top dollar on their gear then i want to know that i am buying "fresh" product...not something that has sat on a shelf for a couple years....

Anybody else feel the same?
 
I completely agree with you. Lately I've been looking for clones that are legit for that very reason. No more guess work if you know where the clone came from. Make a mother and grow it until you're tired of it.
 
I'm not trying to disagree or anything, but if seeds are stored correctly aren't they good forever?

Sounds great in theory.

A date means what exactly? It wouldn't change anything. If there are shady seed sellers, they're still going to be shady especially in this market.

Repackaging is easy and cheaper than throwing away potential profit.

Prove the dates were false.

Which gov agency is going to regulate this?

And finally...

We don't even have a guarantee that we get the strain we purchase and you're worried about a "born on" date? Just seems a bit, silly.

No.
However....i have germinated seeds that were over 25 years old that were stored incorrectly...lol

Its silly that i have to explain this...

If the breeder packages his seeds and dates them soon after production and then ships to sellers/distributors then those resellers cant repackage and at least the buyer has some idea of how old the seeds are.

It may happen that a breeder uses old seeds when he pakages or dates them, but that isnt in his best interest if he is building a brand, is it? I mean... if the germ success rate is low on his product word gets out and they drive themselves out of business.

Dating isnt a percect solution but it does help.

And i would think that breeders would want this for their own protection of their brand. If a reseller is selling old seeds that dont germ well then whos fault is that? The resellers, for selling old dated seeds? And that protects the brand.

And who said anything about a regulatory body that verifies the dates? It isnt needed if the breeder is doing his own packaging.

Lets take a creeder with 20 or more strains on their menu. They will likely breed the seeds in batches of anywhere from 3k-10k seeds at a time, then throw them in the vault (temp controlled box). They will send those out to seedbanks as they are ordered. When they get low they will breed more.

It could take years to move a low volume strain unless a grower comes in and wants a thousand at a time.

So I can see how old seeds can get into the chain.

The solution is simple. Just etch little barcodes on them at sorting. ;)

I think you're giving breeders too much credit. They're not weed Gods or anything. This is a profit game. I've no doubt some are in it because they love what they do but it's still for profit. They'll store them correctly and date them when packaged. Old seeds, new date. How would you know?

I wouldn't be shocked to see expiration dates in the future though. Why not convince people to throw away viable seeds and buy more? Makes sense to me.

Well....there are breeders who care about their work and brand name

And there are pollen chuckers....
