Outdoor Concerns

I am in northern Midewest of the U.S. and we have a few plants that we are planning to put outside. A couple of concerns that we have is that we do not know if we will get the 12 hours of darkness required to have the plants bud. As well as any helpful hints/tips would be much appreciated. Any time line for growing in this area?

you will get the the 12/12...... but not until august/ september. just like anywhere else in the upper hemisphere.

what is the best way to artificially force the 12 hours of darkness upon the plants? Should i use a box or something?

box, garbage can, black bag, anything you can think of that will be completely light proof.

Up North myself . . . I grow a couple outdoors every summer, in 3-5 gallon buckets. Come cool September nights, I spray mine w/pyrethrum based insecticide and move them inside by a south facing window. Always get a nice bonus of buds around Xmas (fully cured) w/o any extra lighting, etc.
Anyone doing this probably already knows that you have to spray again 2-3 weeks later to ensure egg disposal.
