I think you are referring to slow-release fertilizers. They come in hundreds of various analysis’ and are typically in the granular, prilled form. I could go on and on about the different advantages of each type(s) (SCU, Polyon, IBDU, etc.) until most people start looking at their watch, but I think the basics will work in this situation. Granular fertilizers come in two basic types. 100% soluble and coated or “slow release.” All-soluble fertilizers are good when peak growth is desired during times of ideal growing conditions. I’ve seen anhydrous-ammonia applied to corn, and within 72 hours you can literally hear the corn creaking and groaning as it grows at night…spooky. You are looking for something much less aggressive with more room for applicator error. Scotts/MiracleGrow makes a product called “Osmocote” that can be either incorporated in the soil or, simply applied around the drip line of the plant. It will feed for up to 6 months and carries minimal risk for over-application, even for a rookie. Something like this would be great to minimize your trips during vegetation. Just make sure to keep a healthy distance from the stem (4”-6”) and do not over-apply. Use the minimum amounts recommended or you run the risk of killing your plant…slow release or not. This product comes in a 15-9-12 with 9 micro-nutrients. You can pay much more if you like clever marketing/packaging but in the end it is all just N-P-K.
