Opponents given OK to gather signatures for measure to decriminalize possession and sale of marijuana

LOS ANGELES - Backers of an initiative that would decriminalize the possession, sale and cultivation of marijuana were given approval Friday to begin gathering signatures by Secretary of State Debra Bowen.

Valid signatures from 504,760 registered voters - 5 percent of the total votes cast for governor in the 2010 general election - must be submitted by March 26 to qualify what backers have dubbed "Regulate Marijuana Like Wine" for the November 2012 ballot.

The initiative includes provisions that would regulate the commercial marijuana trade to match regulation of wine and beer.

A measure that would have legalized marijuana, Proposition 19 on the November 2010 ballot, was defeated by a margin of 53.5 percent-46.5 percent.

So the effort is on!

eventually it will happen...might not be 2012...but you'll see that gap decrease as the old fogies of the reefer madness age die off :)

Great idea..if I could sign it I def would. I wonder about the regulations though. Would THC content be regulated ?
Another thing that concerns is that big biz may dominate in such a market. If it also allows home cultivation, my concerns would be allayed

Like Gawd will save us..

Folks if you care about California as our Champion in "legalizing(tm)" then consider donating monies as the least you can do.

This looks like it is unfunded signature collecting.

I personally know what it is like to get people to get up and gather signatures not for free but at a loss of monies and time for the signature gatherer. I was a county captain for California Cannabis Initiative in this county.

So is this reply from massah the truth? Is it an insight? The answer is yes it is.
It is the truth and it is an honest peek into the mind of many of us at one age or the other.

What is this Regulate Marijuana Like Wine?

It's about establishing an industry and defining Cannabis for the citizen.

It doesn't include protections for those who have to work for a living from being fired for a drug violation but it does define commerce.

It may be all we have for 2012.

Remember what has been done to tobacco. Addictive substances added and they gained the clout to get away with it for generations. Careful what we wish for.

I think it might happen. The worse shape the economy is in, the more likely it is to pass. And shit is messed up right now. 2012 could be the year. This initiative is one I think the whole community can get behind, unlike prop19.

It's not perfect, but I think it's widely accepted as progress.

regulating THC content is nonsense - it is based on the rumor that cannabis has somehow been genetically engineered by us genius growers over the past 40 years to be stronger than it has been in 75,000,000 years of evolution. i would agree, i think, that average THC content has gone up since more people have access to fresh, non-bricked buds. but, saying that top potency pot is worse is just an excuse to punish it as hard as they did in the 30's.

Agree, of course. I submit that the higher, real THC ratio, actually avoids the ruined pot based, paranoia, goofy, incoherent, lazy effects that can come from lower THC and higher amounts other cannabinoids. Some of those might not be so good.

These are the social ills that the early US laws were against. Stronger, fresh pot is actually better pot
all the way around, for society, as well.
