Opinions on Ph test kits vs meters

I'm trying to decide if it's worth it or not to buy a ph meter. Right now I'm using the general hydroponics tester kit for my hydro grow with no problems. I can keep my water at about the right ph according to their color charts.

However, I've heard that these test kits are not very accurate so I'm wondering if anyone has tested them compared to a highly accurate ph meter (if there is such thing). I have no probem investing in a meter if that's the wisest choice, but it seems that people have a lot of trouble maintaing/calibrating ph meters. Any opinions on what is the most reliable way of monitoring ph would be greatly appreciated.

definitely worth it to go digtal

I used to use Hanna HI 9914xx meter (wall outlet), which worked well, but I abused it and the probe went bad.

Just got a Milwaukee ph56 (battery) and its been great. (cheaper than replacement probe on Hanna too)

couple tips to keep calibrated:
-The wall outlet meter used to jack up calibration when my water pumps in reservoir turned on/off while the meter was on. If pumps come on often, I'd unplug while testing. The battery powered meter does not seem to care about pumps on/off

-Always keep probe tip wet. I put a cup in reservoir and fill with water, then slide probe in and transfer to other reservoirs or storage solution to keep wet at all times.
