you can cover a 4x8 with a 1kw/xxl hood and a light mover very well.

ok then that's your opinion. You do know that light movers only use something like 50 watts or less right?
I know for a FACT that movers are well worth the investment.
Of course one light on a mover will not outproduce two lights
but for the money you spend running a single light utilizing a mover is highly effective and produce some very great results. Often 30-40%more yield

1000 watt
6x6 ..........with it centered in the room u get the minal amount no matter where or what u do ..............set up a scrog grow in that room lollipop those lower parts and the results will be great for u .....................14 to 18 inchs for the mh ........18 to 32 inchs for the HPS.............dual arc bulbs stick with 24 inchs from the top of the plant and u are in the goldie locks zone for the whole tent
a 4x4 is a waste of a 1000w u could do the same lvls of light with a 600 watt
the hood design is going to effect the area too a strait cool tube is not as good as a expanded flat hood

If you're going two lights. Get 2 600s in a 4x8

Honestly I think two 600s in a 4x8 is probably the epitome of an indoor home grow, even though it's not what I use.
To answer your question OP, it really depends on the hood used as well as the needs of the gardener. I run my 1,000w light in a room roughly 5ftx10ft and while some might say I need more light, I've been happy so far and I really appreciate the extra room I afforded myself when I designed the space. So it isn't about what we think, it's about what you want.
