G'day.

Thought I would start a journal so folks can see that I actually grow plants. Grew my first buds in '78 and have been growing off and on since but mostly off as I didn't live where a grow was possible.

I moved to northern Alberta from the beautiful Fraser Valley in Feb. 2001 bringing 6 hash plant clones, full of mites, with me.

Rented a old trailer in a small town and built a 12x5' grow room in a 24x24' heated garage. I insulated the walls of the grow room so didn't have to heat the whole garage. Started experimenting with DWC then and grew my first plants there under a homemade bank of T-12s. Took the guts and ends out of 4 - 4ft shop lights and mounted them on a sheet of plywood. Still using it now because buddy had my HIDs and you'll see it in a bit.

Was paying $500/mth rent so I bought that dump for 22G and paid a $350 mortgage instead. :) A year later got an inheritance and bought this place out on the highway. 80x16' ,1990 winterized mobile with a connected 18x37' shop. My own 12x15x10' man cave off the hallway to the shop too. :) Sitting on 7.5 acres and I got the whole shebang for 50G. Go shooting in my back yard like at that damn hawk today trying to get our chickens! Missed but sure I saw a couple of breast feathers floating down when he dodged that 16 gauge load of #4 shot. lol

Big selling feature of this place was the cold storage room the old guy had built in the basement. More like a giant concrete box under the shop/trailer for storage and for the water system/conditioner/distiller. We get out house water from an 80x50m/yd dugout in my yard that's about 12' deep. A week after moving in I gutted most of the shelves out of the cold room and started setting up with the plants still at the old place in town.

There was already 4" inlet and outlet pipes built in so I rigged up a fan from a microwave that was 5" and used two steel corner brackets to mount the fan with a 5"-4" adaptor. Tricky little job but it worked fine.

DIYFan.jpg

It's controlled with the RH/heat controller that I later added a DIY speed controller to and use now with the 6" inline fan I use now. I'm making another unit with all 3 on a flat metal tool box now for a grow tent soon to be parked outside the current grow room. It will have it's exhaust go into the grow room and the air in the grow room gets shot outside under the shop. Time to start thinking about using my CO2 tank. :)

FanControl.jpg

Enough of that and on to what's up today.

Slowed down on growing the last couple years due to illness and a bit of burnout too. A small stroke 3 years ago March spun me down into a depression like I haven't had in 20 years. A couple of lung collapses and worsening arthritis didn't help either. (whine, snivel, complain) :)

I planted 9 beans in early June. Three Otto#1 very high CBD with only 1% THC max. Only two came up but all 6 of the others did. The other 6 are a strain of my own I call Northern Mist. It's Kali Mist x Northern Lights #5 both purchased originally from Marc Emery's seed bank about 2002. The Kali alone gave me anxiety attacks if I had just a bit too much so I bred it with the NL and the right pheno from that is the bomb! Lifts my mood right out of the hole and puts a smile on my face. Good for joint pain too.

These ones have been crossed with an auto and I'm trying to develop the pheno I like as an auto so I can grow outdoors way up north here. The auto is called Purple Jem. Mazar x LowRyder.

Grew them in the bedroom closet under some CFLs. Near the end of July had to take off to BC to help my 89 yo mom move into a 5th wheel from a beautiful house overlooking Okanagan lake in Peachland. Knew I'd be gone for at least a month so I pruned the plants back drastically so they wouldn't grow too fast and the wife would just have to water them and keep them alive as I put them in worm castings, real soil and promix that had bone meal added. They survived but didn't look so great and I had two males in full flower.

The security recaptcha thing is relentless so I have to call it quits for now. I can post in other threads fine but even after logging off and back on again it won't leave me alone trying to post this.

Canada?... I'm a Boston Bruins fan..not my favorite place!..but yeah my opp is in the basement too and it's great. temp and humidity are never an issue. saves a bunch on start-up and electric.... can't wait to see your babies\ ladies\ plants.... another question for you, can I keep cutting my veg down and try and make it bushier or at some point will it be counter probuctice, cause node areas or branch out points? I have grown before but never wanted to waste a plant to experiment on and really see what I could do in veg as far as plant manipulation. any personal experiences?

Chop 'em, bend 'em whichever way you want. It slows them down but you can shape a plant into any configuration that suits your grow method and space. If I can keep this journal going you'll end up seeing plants get tortured in all sorts of ways.

Maybe hold off on replying in here tonight and I'll see if I can keep going but I get shut down every 10 words I type by the security ogre so I may have to abort this journal if it continues.

Chapter two.

I'll repeat the last bit about the types of plants and see if I can go on in a fresh post.

Here's the little darlings 12 days after sprouting on June 14. The two Ottos on the right and the smaller cross at the bottom middle came up root first and I didn't find out until I poked around and a brown bit wouldn't move. Turned out it was the dead tip of the tap root. Turned it around and hoped for the best. Up she came a couple days later and all is well :)

Here they are on July 7

This is them when I got back 6 weeks later on Sept 9. Wife didn't do too bad.

Here's the plants 10 min ago basking under 400W of raging T-12 power. Eight on top and two in the front for some side lighting.

Plants22101601.jpg

A shot from the front.

Plants22101603.jpg

The four girls are trying to flower under 20/4 lighting but not going to far. Going to take a couple cuttings from each and see if they veg properly once rooted. Is this flowering that doesn't go further than this or just a lot of pre-flowers? Haven't had this happen before but the auto genes ar probably causing it. The males flowered fine under 20/4 and I'll be pollinating all 4 of these to see if their seeds are more of a real auto. The girls are stretching but so are the Ottos so it's likely the lousy lighting so I'll get the 400W EYE going in there.

Plants22101602.jpg

Here's a pic of the DIY veg tent I made out of 2x2s and panda film. The walls fold in so it could get down the narrow stairs into the basement but I commandeered the spare bedroom and have it in there now. It's 52" wide to accommodate my T-12 panel which is 50.5" long. Still looks just like that. :)

End of chapter 3 I think so I can see if I can post it.

Chapter 4

Three went well so I'll show the detail of my hi-tech T-12 panel. Should have called this OMU's Ghetto Grow!

This is the tube side as I built it 15 years ago. The tubes are closer together than in shop lights on 2 1/2" centers. I marked the board off for 8 tubes at the time but only installed 6. The old foil was damaged so I removed that then replaced it using thumb tacks to resurface the wood.

T-12s02.JPG
Finally installed the last two.

T-12s03.JPG
It has better tubes in it now. Was just testing it out here. No foil yet.

Detail of the back side with the ballasts. I used tin roof screws with the rubber gaskets from some of the same screws to hold the ballasts just above the wood as they get hot and I wanted them up a bit. The black power wire to each had a quick connect installed so I can run 2, 4, 6 or 8 lights as needed. The fan in the center isn't really needed so I'm taking it out then I an use the speed controller for another fan. Never had a fire. Never got a shock. :)

T-12s01.JPG
This is the 8x4 tent as it is at my buddy's just before we cleaned it out to sterilize it before it comes over here soon. I'll be looking a little more hi-tech when it gets set up with my new light rail sporting the new 1000W Eye Hortilux. Gonna be a while before I can fill her up with green.

Got the four confirmed girls downstairs under the 400W veg bulb and they grew 2" in 2 days so they want to go. They are surprisingly uniform in their looks, growth rate etc. They are 28 and 30" tall now.

Plants26101601.jpg

Plants26101602.jpg

Did some stem rubbing to get a sniff and the two slightly shorter plants have a sweet candy smell that seems to me like Juicy Fruit gum. The other two not so much but subtly alike.

Getting a little root bound but not bad. I'll pick up a tarp tomorrow in town to mix my ProMix blend up in and stick them in 4gal pots on Saturday, load em up with bloom nutes and flip them a few days later.

Roots251016.jpg

Now the Ottos got room to breathe and hoping the cuttings show sex soon so I can move any girl(s) downstairs. Need to sprout my last 3 beans of these to make sure I have a male to breed some more beans with.

Ottos25101601.jpg

Any guesses:

Plants25101602.jpg

My buddies showed up today on their way to the big city and grabbed $800 to pay for the grow goodies I ordered and bring it on home to me! :)

Feels like the best Xmas in years even if I did have to pay for my own presents.

Decided that open shade wasn't the best in there so swapped it out for the air-cooled hood. I rigged it up a while back with a mogul socket at the other end so I can run two bulbs in it. Used metal strapping to make an open frame so air can get thru if I want to hook it up to the exhaust fan from the other side. Got the 400W veg light in one end and a 150W hps in the other end for some extra lumens and spectrum. The pic below has the 400 hps.

Dualbulbfixture.JPG Dualbulbhood.JPG

They seem to like it under there just fine. I think I'll mount the screen over them when I flip to spread the tops out more to get more light deeper in the plants and let the colas breathe.

Plants28101601.jpg

Hung a piece of tinfoil in the end so I don't get blinded when I walk in. Like getting shot with a light cannon! :)

All my goodies are at my buddies place now and they're coming over tomorrow with them. Got an extra 107L bale of ProMix HP added to the order too. Whoo hoo!

Please for everyone sake don't bring a lot of attention to yourself by shooting at that damn hawk. There are endangered species Nazis who would love to jump in your sh++( depending upon your jurisdiction). Lots of places Game Wardens don't need a warrant just a reason to believe something untoward is going on, DON't give them an excuse to come on your land.

Those are looking great! Sure trained that one wide open eh. :)

You flowering under the T-5s? Have you seen the ones Hortilux makes now. Not cheap I bet but they make great HID bulbs so the T-5s are likely real good too. I wouldn't mind getting some T-5s but just blew another $800 on grow stuff so I better get growing. :)

:peace:
No... I'm tempted to try and flower under the t5's tho. But I would rather just let them sit in there in veg and pull the plants Out to flower as I need to.... Hps tried and tested.

Yeah the I hortilux powerveg t5 full spec bulb..... Yeah it looks great and I would love to try it but at $30 a bulb I don't think so....I would need 16 bulbs, That's $480. At that price I could buy 2 1000w hps setups. They look cool tho

Don't worry Billiam76. Ever since some Alberta farmer reported his sick cow about the mad cow disease everybody sicks to the motto, "Shoot, shovel and shut up!" I can blast away with my .303 in my front yard and no one will say a word.

We have farm status and are allowed to protect our animals from predators with lethal force if needed. I'm the first person to defend endangered species but but birds of prey are in no short supply here. I'm also a PETA supporter. People Eating Tasty Animals! :D

Any g'damned protesters that show up here will be lucky if they don't become an endangered species themselves!

I figured they would be pricey but from what I've experienced with their HID bulbs they are worth way more in longevity and performance than you will get from anything else.

I'm going to have to upgrade my T-12 unit. Can't find tubes for it anymore. I used to get the 40W GE Daylight Ultras, 6500K and 3050 lumens for $4 each and now the best I can find is the 6500K Sylvania 40W with 2250 lumens. That's a big loss with an 8 tube light and twice the price.

I got a new bulb for my 400mh so I can use that for more veg space but will phase out my ancient T-12s soon.

Update time!

Got all my goodies now and solidifying plans going forward.

Goodies01.jpg

The box in the upper center is the drive motor for my new light rail. Just in front of and below it is the 500g jar of Big Bud and the 250ml jug of Bud Ignitor being used in this experiment. All the nutes are brand new and all that I have used for years. Other than the GroTek CalMag they are all AN. It's 2% N isn't wanted but for the amount I use shouldn't make a difference.

Plants A & B are one tall, one small as are C & D. A & B have the same nutes as C & D but also have Bud Ignitor where C & D just have BB. Funny story about that. ;)

With yesterday's repot to 4gal pots they all got watered in from the same 20L jug:

2.5ml/L ea G,M,B, 10ml CalMag, 8g Big Bud, 10ml Rhino Skin, 10ml CalMag and 2 Tbsps epsom salts. 4 Tbsp of organic, unsulfured blackstrap molasses was added as well to feed the Myco and any other good bugs living in there. :)

The soil mix I used to fill the space needed in the new pots was 50/50 ProMix HP and ProMix potting soil blend with organic nutes and Myco. The HP has no added nutes but does have Myco. About 2L of coarse perlite was tossed in as well. Took that all in to the shop and dumped it on a 6x6' tarp for mixing. On top of that I added 2 tbsp PyroClay, 2 tbsp fine dolomitic lime, 2 tbsp fine agricultural gypsum and about a cup of 12-0-0 blood meal to boost up the fast N for the upcoming stretch. The lime and gypsum is why I went low on the CalMag.

I've used this type of mix for years and it's like a happy marriage between organic and hydro. You get the boost of the good hydro nutes and the influence to taste and smell from all the organic goodies in the original soil/soilless blend. The ProMix stuff is all ORMI rated so it would be easy to sub in pure organic nutes to stay pure if you want. The PyroClay, dolomitic lime, agricultural gypsum and blood meal I used are organic rated too tho not blessed.

As each plant was repotted an inch was sawed off the bottom of the rootball to get rid of stringers. I do that with every up-pot move from sprouts.

Rootprune01.jpg

That pic is from the up-pot from 1L - 10L pots. Did the same now with the 20L pots. I rake the bread knife down the sides to rip off all those roots you see on the sides too. Just do it! The plants love it later.

So now the 4 girls have been downstairs for a while and very happy with 550 watts of HID light, 400mh/150hps. and have to decide how to flower them out. I can stand them all like this pic so I can tie big buds to the wall easily with the shade hanging vertically in front to blast all 4 from the upper front.

VertigleGrow01.jpg

Or use a combination of the vertical and horizontal with this screen, or a bigger one I can make in minutes, attached to spread everything out more.

Screen.jpg
And end up looking like this.

VScroG01.JPG

All four of these plants are from seed and each will have a couple of lower branches pollinated with what I collected off the two males of the same strain that auto-flowered to promote autoflowering in the resulting F2 seeds.

I'm half-assed training them to go into a horizontal ScroG using the vertical as well so I keep bending the main stems out so the light can get down deep and bring up lower side branches to get to the screen during stretch.

Plants01111601.jpg
To this.

BentGirls02111601.jpg

♪♪♫ Bend them, shape them, anyway you want them, long as you love them it's alright! ♫♪♫ :)
