old school mh 1 k buzzzz

I have an old 1,000 watt mh. Only used for one grow. I bought it in 1990! I plugged it in recently, it lights up fine but creates quite a loud buzz. For old school is that normal? Should I look at replacing the ballast? Or just bag it and buy new?

Old magnetic ballast are noisy. Especially if they're running near your living space. You can buy a quality magnetic, or better yet, a digital ballast for about $150. Silence is golden.

Then again your inline fan will be loud as balls in comparison to ballast noise....

Any benefits either way? Why do you like the digital over the magnetic? I'm sure this has been chewed over here, just wondering.

the magnetics have an annoying buzz and the digitals are damn near silent and they use less power.
