Fanatic adherence to any ideology can cause great evil. When you stop questioning and thinking for yourself is when the trouble starts. It doesn't have to be religion. Communism is responsible for millions of deaths. Fascism brought about WWII. Racism and bigotry have caused great misery and evil throughout history. Basically anything with an -ism attached to it. I agree that religion has done great harm in the world. Religion has also done great good in the world. During the middle ages when most of Europe (and Christianity for that matter) was wallowing in it's own filth; science, philosophy, art, and medicine blossomed under Islam and the Arab world. The problem isn't the ideology. The problem is what people do with it. Separation of church and state should be absolute.
