The money is the motive...
A little background. This is my first online journal as I just realized this site existed about a month ago, 10th season growing outdoors. I usually yield around 30-35#s annually when all is said and done, after losses, males, etc. All of the seeds are a collection from previous males and/or bag-seeds. Most of which SHOULD be sativa. This journal will be updated regularly with pictures as I can get out to my fields, usually once weekly. It is a very long hike and I camp when I go (most of the time), so some posts will be a little late.
I do plan on purchasing some seeds from one of the reputable companies that I have come across on various threads, just taking my time and researching some strains to see which one will meet my needs (suggestions welcome for a good combination of yield/potency. I prefer sativa strains that love the outdoors as much as I do, or more perhaps?).
Sooo, to get everyone current.
Overview:
Seeds: 80 from various males and bag-seeds, mostly sativa.
Nutes: Botanicare Pureblend Pro, Grow – Vegatative; Liquid Karma; Pureblend Pro-Bloom - Fruit & Flower Formula; and molasses
Light Source: Sun
Water Source: Natural Spring Water.
Germination: 03/10/10 – 03/18/10, 67.5% success, 54:80
03/10/10
Began germination of 80 seeds using paper towels. Hiked to a long time grow spot near a natural spring and found a newish fire pit with beer cans and shit all around. I made multiple trips digging out my soil mix because that much FFOF is expensive and logistics was not an issue.
03/13/10
25 seeds moved to solo cups with 15% perlite 85% FF Light Warrior.
03/15/10
22 seeds moved to solo cups with 15% perlite 85% FF Light Warrior. Picked a couple of spots that I have grown in before and began prepping the area in site #1. I am digging 3'x3'x2' holes in native soil and filling them with a mixture of ~50% FFOF, ~40% Native soil, ~10% perlite. I may add some water absorbing polymers to the mix (recommendations welcome), I am thinking aquadiamonds. The measurements are approximate because I mix everything up in the field and I do not measure it exactly.
03/16/10
Woke up and continued prepping site #1 (camped out).
03/18/10
Finished prepping site #2 and will be transplanting my seedlings into the ground in approximately 3 weeks. I used the fishing line technique to keep the deer away as I have found this to be most effective. I will also be adding chicken wire cages at some point. I threw the seeds that never “popped” (26) into some soil because I am sure some will eventually sprout, leaving me now with 54. of which, 47 have sprouted.
03/21/10
Still only 47 sprouts, I think this unusually cool weather is affecting the speed, but I have plenty of patience.
03/24/10
54 sprouts. I tried to take you all some pictures, but my camera is shit so I will pick one up Friday morning and post a few. I am not going all overboard with the pics because they are just seedlings--not very exciting.
Now, to answer some questions that you may have...
No, I am not vegging indoors as I usually do because my ballast is screwed up and I do not feel like spending the money for something that I do not really need at this point. I do have all the seedlings under makeshift mini-greenhouses.
No, I do not sex the plants before putting them in the ground, although this is an excellent practice to save work and money on growing males!
I will be using Botanicare nutes (listed above) for the first time, twice monthly, beginning whenever my plants start asking for them. Starting at ¼ strength and increasing to as much as I can without burning the chicks up. Flushing 3 weeks before harvest. If my girls start showing signs of any deficiencies, I will change this lineup a bit. If anyone has experience with these products, please feel free to share some experience.
Water will be collected via a nearby spring fed stream at site #1 and a nearby spring at site #2. These water sources have been safe for drinking in the past. I will get a pH reading of the water the next time I go out. I will add pH up/down as needed, especially when I start adding nutes to keep my water at 6.8.
Both sites will receive a minimum of 6h of direct sunlight.
Finally, no, I do not worry about helicopters!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask; any comments or recommendations, feel free to leave them. I will take everything into consideration. As mentioned before, I will have some pictures up by Monday night, and many more as the girls turn their plot into a home.
