Newb Hydro Question....

I found this dude on ebay who builds stealth computer cases with a little mini- hydro container. Check out the attached pic. I'm building a coupla stealth boxes this week and would like to run a little hydro system similar to the one in the pic.

My question is- what do you do with a tiny container like this and nothing but a pump and a airstone (he also includes some hydroton medium and net pots). Do you just fill it up with water to the top, add nutrients, and replace the water every week or so?

Or do you fill the water just below the plant level?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated!!:weed:

you fill the nutrient level to just below the netcups the bubbles from the airstone pop and spray small droplets onto the substrate great for cloning and plants that already have roots hanging out the cups but until you have a little root growth out of the cups you will prob need to supplement with a drip system or just hand water for a week or so until the plant establishes roots long enough to actually get splashed with nutrient . i normally use a pot on pot system the top top is filled with clay beads and has a dripper flowing through the beads into the bottom pot and back to the reservoir i also have airstones in the bottom tub wich splashes the bottom of the beads in no time at all i end up with a brick of roots in the bottom tub. but without the dripper they initially wouldnt get anything and as my tubs are like 15 litres each the top tubs roots wouldnt get nutrient but with such a small pots who knows the airstone alone may do it but i doubt it. hope this helps give you some ideas .ps get a small pump and drip as well.

ok, cool. that makes sense. Also brings me to a few more questions...:)

How do set up a drip pump (i'm assuming its going to involve a submersible pump and possibly a timer?)?

How many times do i set it to drip? Or does it run 24/7?

Again, thanx in advance:-o

yeah man you need a submersible pump hooked up to a timer the duration you run it depends on factors like room temp size of plants etc all you need to do is submerge the pump in the reservoir and run irrigation tubing to just above your substrate i run a large pump feeding several pots so i start off with large diameter hose and then use reducers once i get to each pot you dont need much of a drip just enough to keep the medium moist.
