New to manifolding and growing. Is this normal

What I have done the two times I have done it is leave some of the stem above where you top it. Maybe even an inch. I learned this the hard way when I broke a branch on my auto manifolding.
 
Oh I don’t doubt that. I’m just telling him that when he tops he should leave more of the branch he chops so it won’t split and break. At least that was my experience my first try.
It is good to leave some of the stem. You can see mine in the pic. I leave about a 1/4" when topping
