New to CFL Growing.

Alright, I've planted my 3 seeds in my Multi-Grow soil w/ I believe trace minerals after leaving the seeds in distilled water for 24 hrs. I'm waiting for them to sprout out of the soil and all I have right now is some 100 watt long-life white bulb which should hopefully be enough to let them sprout.
Once sprouted, my step dad says he's going to go to some aquarium and buy some of the fluorescent lamps I believe they use in their tanks. I'm not sure about the details, but I was wondering if a better approach would be to go with 6 42 watt fluorescent bulbs for vegetation and I'm not sure if I can get the HPS 150 watt lamp for Flowering. Is there any way that I can flower the marijuana with CFL's or do I need to go with the HPS?

you definitely can flower with CFLs. You need the blue spectrum (5000K+) for vegging, and red spectrum (2700K) for flowering.

Alright, thanks. So, do you think I could just go to Home Depot and buy 3 of the 5000k+ and 3 of the 2700k and be good to go? Also, what should I use to hang the 6 bulbs. Can you suggest something I could buy at Home Depot?

I'll probably go tomorrow with my mom since she's off work and we'll go and ask around...

Lulz, I'm strictly growing rare orchids my step dad brought back from Costa Rica and we're not sure what the name is. So Home Depot thinks...

EDIT: Well, I checked Home Depot online and supposedly the only bulbs I could find were these two:

Code:

I don't know how I can tell the lumens, but I'm thinking of just buying 2x 23 watt Soft White and 1x 23 watt Bright White bulb just for the vegetation period since I'm not planning on growing the plants to big as I only want a smaller yield as it's my first time and I'm a little impatient. What I was thinking is that when the Flowering period comes, I'll just buy about 3-4 more lights or a Lithonia Lighting 3 Ft. 1-Light Strip Fluorescent Fixture for about $15.

How does this sound? If all goes right, I think this will be my official setup. The only problem is I need to get a cheap fixture that will hold 3 light bulbs.

So you need to figure out how many plants your growing.
I vegged 4 under 12 26w 6500k CFL's........I ended up with fucking hedges! The only thing is as they get taller you need to spread the light to all the areas of the plant.
You can get 6500 and 2100k CFL's at Lowes they come in 3 or 4 packs.

If you want you can look at my journal and you can see how i used my cfls. I think its after page 4 not sure though.

HPS is a better choice though....atleast for flowering....IMO

:peace:

I'm growing 3 plants, that is definite. I'm expecting them to sprout sometime soon. I'm trying to grow them so that they are short, yet full of leaves. I'm not sure if there's a Lowes around here, but I'll check online.

Also, what are hedges? And thanks, I'll take a look at that journal.

Where you at?
LOL
Hedges are real thick tight bushes that are usually manicured. Have you seen over the hedge? or edward scissor hands...he actually trims hedges
It's a good thing believe me!

Well, as the plants improve, I think my parents will be more willing to buy me what I need. My mom seems to think growing marijuana is as easy as planting the seed in the ground and just watering... I told that I need more light than some 100 watt incandescent light bulb and she said.... well, open the window...

I just chuckled and she found her mistake, but I'm really looking forward to this project and once I get a few pics I'll probably post a journal.

I'm looking forward to the next few months.

One more thing, could you point me in the direction of a link for the 3 packs of the Fluorescent bulbs you were talking about because I couldn't find them or are they only sold in store? Just asking because the closest Lowes is a good 20 min drive where as Home Depot is like a 2 min drive.

Thanks, I will have to ask about these two products.

Also, I heard 2500k lumens is good for vegatative growth and the 6500k lumens is good for flowering. Is this correct?

Actually the 2500k stands for Kelvins (spelling). Lumens are something different. Lumens are related to the intensity of the light, kelvins are the color spectrum. 6500K is more toward the blue spectrum and good for veg growth and 2500K is more toward the red spectrum and better for flowering. Your bulbs will have both numbers on it, the intensity and color spectrum.

Thanks, this is all the info I've acquired:

Vegetation: 6500k, Daylight/Cool White, 4x 26 watt or 2x 42 watt.

Flowering: 2500k, not sure, and I would add probably two more 42 watt.
